Thanks! I have found it. It's an old mark by Paul Utzcheider (est. 1770) from Sarreguemines, France (called the Capital of Faience), in the east of France. Appreciate your help!

Oops. It's spelled Utzchneider. Left out the N, but who would ever have noticed?!

Google did

Thanks for letting us know. I happen to have a Sarreguemines creamer that I've been trying to identify this week, so looking for your's helped me get a better idea of when mine was made.

But I am still stumped as to how you found your's. The pic on that site is not very good!

I also came across this...

http://cgi.ebay.com/Pair-Cobalt-Blue-Sarreguemines-France-Pottery-Bowls-NR_W0QQitemZ7366603673QQcategoryZ1044QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

But the backstamp is not as well defined as yours.

LtRay: A little while after I posted my question here, I decided to ask on the pottery message board in Ebay. Someone came back with an answer about the time you also answered my question. I put 2 and 2 together, also googling for the town's spelling. (Usually the Ebay message board is no help to me, and I had no real hope of getting an answer there.)

This mark, according to my new book, has been in use by Utzchneider since 1965.
