I bought a replacement scanner on ebay that is the same make and model as my current scanner. My old scanner works fine but one of the plastic hinges on the lid broke off and it takes a lot of fiddling to get the cover on straight (and by the time the cover is straight, one of the four postcards I have on the bed is crooked). Since scanning is a lot of what I do, I need to have it EASY and not waste time fiddling. Anyway - new scanner arrived (and it is advertised as NIB w/ warranty) and it doesn't work! I am waiting to hear back from the seller - his listing states that he does take returns within 10 days but looks like I have to pay postage.
I just want another scanner that works! He had multiple quantities listed in his store. Is it fair for me to have to pay postage to return this to him? He might not require it with a broken item but I would like to know what is customary and fair.
TIA

If you still have your old scanner. Why not continue using it? You probably don't need a lid to the scanner. My scanner did the same thing. I lost use of the original cover. So, just used a thick white cloth as the cover. I place the scanned item on the scanner bed. Placed the thick white cloth over the scanned item and walla, the item scanned out just as good without the original lid/cover. Why don't you give it a try and continue using your old reliable scanner? And, cut your losses on the new one or hopefully, get your money back. Good luck.

If it's not functioning, I would expect to receive a replacement without paying for return shipping. You might offer to split the shipping with him to really sound willing to work with him -- and hope he steps up (if he has a conscience) and tells you that he'll take it back and pay for the postage both ways - as is customary with defective items.
Hope it works out for you.

I believe if something does not work, the seller should pay return postage. I realize others won't agree, that is okay though. Good luck with this, hope it goes well and keep us informed.

Neglus,
Every time I buy a new scanner, the first thing I do is get rid of the lid. It just gets in the way. There are all kinds of things you can use instead. I use a sheet of off-white cover stock.
As far as your new scanner goes, what do you mean by "doesn't work"? Does it power up? What make and model is it?

Take the lid off of the new scanner, and put it on the old scanner - problem solved!

Maybe I was a little hasty in buying the new one - I guess I could rig up something to replace the lid but honestly I just want to place the postcards on the bed and scan and not worry about things that were once straight will move and scan crooked. I scan hundreds of postcards a week and I can't be fiddling or it will take TOOOOOO long!!
It's a Microtek6000 - not top of the line but it suits my purposes and looks like it's been discontinued. I have no idea what's wrong with this new one - the lamp works - it moves - but heres the BEST image I could get:

Send it back for sure -- scanners are unrepairable. You have a legit claim that is was broken in shipping. This is why buying electronics online is not always a good idea.

Neglus, If they hassle you about returns, you can always file with Paypal as you purchased a New in Box item and it has fallen short of your expectations.

problem is of course - PAYPAL WOULD NOT LET ME PAY WITH A CREDIT CARD!!!!!!! I clicked "other payment options" and my two choices were "bank account" and "balance". I went ahead and used my balance.

But can't you still file a claim? Has it been past the 30 day time frame? I am not the expert on Paypal but I am sure someone can help you from this board. Or just call Paypal directly. Someone told me recently Paypal emailed sellers a phone number to contact them.

Thanks mama - I will call if I don't hear from the seller. I just purchased scanner Monday and it arrived last night so time is not a problem. I thought that disputes could only be CC but maybe that's just the chargebacks. Hopefully it won't come to that - sellers FB sounds like he's on the up and up.
