Well... this certainly was not the news I wanted to wake up to today! Bidpay is closing, effective December 31st 2005. They will no longer be providing their money order services. This is going to kill my international sales! Any suggestions on alternate services? Here's a link to their website so you can read the notice:

Just thought I'd pass the information on...

Sorry to hear that, eauctionmgmt. It's a jolt to realize you have to reconfigure the way you do business. Not the pleasantest thing to find out during the holidays.

Curious to know how you learned of this and where on their site is this mentioned?

I especially like the long lead time and the email that I DID NOT receive. You would think that any registered user (whose registration ID is an email address) would get an email. But hey!, they've got 8 days before they shut down, why rush to tell us?
Postal money orders work fine too, I guess, but I preferred BidPay.
Now I have to revise my boilerplate and auctions prepared for January

Thanks! This link worked and it is there on top. Bummer for those who sell overseas and the notice is a bit short. One would think they would have psoted it at least 30 days in advance.

They were never a large part of my auction payment methods, but did fill a void since I don't take PP.
Hopefully somebody else will take their place.

So some of us will have to go in and revise our terms, right? I don't suppose Ebay or Vendio would automatically take Bidpay out.

Strange. Here's a copy of an email I got from Bidpay on the 20th of this month:

your overseas bidders will have to go to western union office and wire you the fund,or if they are in Japan or Candada, they can buy you a postal order there.
Or thomas cook agency, american express offices or bank cashier check or cash.
OR if you can open a merchant account or use paypal, make them pay for trackable shipping.

Bidpay's decision may be based on Ebay's safe payment policy. Maybe they see the writing on the wall:

of course eBay and VD won't take bidpay out of our terms. just went and manually removed it as a VD option and revoked their authorization token on eBay.

important! don't forget to log into your bidpay account and update your settings - nearly forgot to. it's under account central - seller - auto banner insertion - disable.
otherwise, i guess they'd keep on inserting banners right up to the end. who knows? didn't want to take a chance.

Bidpay was not a large part of my business, only a few customers over the years used them. I also think 8 days notice is too abrupt, maybe it was a last minute decision, they wanted to finish everything in one tax year.

No big deal really since I still have a US$ check book for purchases from US sellers, and I only really accepted BidPay and PayingFast from US buyers too lazy to send a regular money order. Buyers in other countries all pay direct into my bank accounts so no change for them...

Is anyone concerned about money orders that are supposed to be en route? I have a lot of international buyers, and they mostly pay by Bidpay, I am reluctant to take Paypal, but I am not sure what else to do.
Has anyone on this board had problems with international Paypal payments? Most of my payments would be under $20.

"Most of my payments would be under $20..."
Amber: you KNOW Ralphie's opinion on this subject, right?
"What is yer RISK TOLERANCE level?"
Personally, I feel that PayPal problems are extremely RARE...
So, for $20 orders, I'd accept orders from just about anyplace, including such uncivilized backwaters as ELBONIA and, even CANADA!
OTOH: when I sell a $1000 scientific balance, there better be a CONFIRMED USA ADDRESS WITH A SIGNATURE...

Thanks Tom, so far I have never had a single problem with Paypal, but it is hearing the horror stories that put you off. For the small amounts my sales usually are, I think I am going to accept Paypal. I have found that trying to get people to pay by more difficult means for them, causes the most problems.
