Went to the post office this morning and on top of paying for postage, purchased a money order to remove funds from my account (have more in the account than you can take out in cash and don't want to wait for a bank transfer? Buy a money order). Left a bit in the account to pay for items I was bidding on today and went merrily on my way.
So imagine my surprise when I go to pay for an item tonight and my account is nearly a grand in the hole. Somehow the post office is showing a dupicate charge to the one I made this morning, only this one was made at 8pm. One cleared, one pending.
Why do I think tomorrow is going to be full of fun joy and giggles.

Sounds like you had a sibling to the only clerk I don't like to go to in our local P.O.
Had a Money Order to cash there a week ago and thought -- "Gee, how complicated can this be for her. Let's give her a shot..."
Did that mostly because I was the only one in the room and I'd probably have to wait 5 mins for another clerk to finish a task next to her - and she looked me straight in the eye and asked: "Can I help you?"
I knew my earlier assessment was accurate when she started tap, tap, tapping on her screen with her pen (don't ya like it when they do that?) -- and then I hear: "Aww CRAP" --- I just looked at one of my favorite clerks and rolled my eyes...
It seemed she punched something wrong - that took her another few minutes to correct. She's been there for more than 20 years, I think I heard -- and probably does the work of 1/2 a person just slightly more competent.
It did work out - I got my money (about $30) and it just cemented in my mind (again) that there are people who can do their job and people who have to be "helped along."
Oh, well. Hope you get it straightened out in the a.m.

My clerk is actually awesome. When I first started going to this post office I zeroed in on two and got them trained to my needs (as in don't require customs forms on 50 international packages that are under an ounce anyway) Once has retired but the other has not only always been a huge help but also risen in the ranks. He's the one that processed my actual purchase so getting hiom in on getting this sorted out shouldn't be a problem - it's figuring out how the hell they processed a second charge when the first was a debit transaction (as in - must enter pin number) and did it 9 hours later. Luckily my smart one will be there first thing in the a.m.
Got my fingers crossed!

fenix03,
I hope for your sake that PayPal was not involved in any of this mess. It sounds just like them to "double tap" you to make sure you are dead, and not playing possum.

Are you sure it wasn't on PayPal's end? I've had this happen. In fact, there was a strange charge on my PayPal account coming from my debit card. The ID of the person requesting the money was a bunch of letters all jumbled up. The dollar amount was small so I knew it was someone checking to see if I had funds in the account (the gas station does this). I knew I hadn't used my debit card in a long time so I called PayPal. He stated it was nothing, just someone checking my PP account for funds and the amount would drop off in a few days. Nothing????? I hadn't used my card for a while. There shouldn't have been anyone checking my account. I had to have him cancel my card and issue a new one because clearly someone had my account number and was attempting to use it. The PP rep was nice enough about the whole thing, but didn't seem to see the urgency in cancelling the card. There's another reason to not keep money in that account!
