After a record breaking warm January, we are back to the harsh reality of winter here in the NE. We had snow, sleet and hail today with temps in the 20's. It was in the 40's and 50's for most of January. In fact, the crocus' and daffodils have started to come up and my lilac bushes had buds on them. I've seen cardinals and blue jays as well as Canadian geese flying in. We were all fooled.
Send some of that weather here!!!

We in Minnesota had the warmest January on record too. BTW Cheryl - cardinals and bluejays don't migrate (at least in Minnesota they don't and I would think that if they can stand MN winters, Ohio would be tropical LOL). We are a long way from crocus and lilacs but I am leaving next week to spend two weeks in Oregon with my mom - I will see green soon!

Cardinals & Blue Jays don't migrate in Eastern PA either & neither does this "bird".
Took these pictures today, at my feeder.
He's one of several that come up to my feeder. I put apples out everyday & when they finish them they go after the bird seed.

I don't normally see the Cardinals or Blue Jays in the winter months here. Where they hide out, I haven't a clue. But, there have been a few "camping" out in the tree in the backyard. The Blue Jay has the oddest song! It just seems the birds have been more active than normal lately. My car shows it. LOL!!

It's been hot here in San Luis Obispo, too. (About 30 miles north of Sanmar.) Supposed to be 80 tomorrow and very warm the rest of the week.
It's nice!

Lucy,
It's been in the low 70's here today. We have early morning patchy fog that has to burn off, so the sun gets a late start on warming up. Trees and plants are starting to bloom. I even got caught in a swarm of bees Monday. A true false spring. Part of what SoCal is seeing is caused by the Santa Ana winds. Don't get too comfortable with the springlike weather just yet. I think Ewora is cooking up a surprise to send down our way from Alaska. Keep the umbrella handy

Sparkz,
Our hills are greening up and I saw some fruit trees in bloom the other day. I think the Santa Ana winds have something to do with how warm it is here even though they're not blowing this far north.
Hope Ewora sends us a good big rainstorm. Rain's good.

Reminds me of my niece - Neglus' oldest. When she was young, she called to her Mom that a deer, or a kangaroo was in their backyard.

We went from below zero last week to a predicted 40 degrees by this next Sunday.
They actually cancelled school on Monday because it had gotten up to about 36 degrees and had rained. That's not a problem on the main roads but on the side streets that don't get plowed to the pavement...well they were just sheets of solid ice. The buses couldn't get through the neighborhoods.
This is very strange weather for February. Rain doesn't usually start this early...usually mid March.

60s here in So. Calif. mountains at 6,000 feet. Rain! Rain! We need rain! Snow would be even better.

Amy...If you could just send 1 to 2 inches of rain to Orange county where the fires are raging, you could get a freeway named after you. In fact, there are a lot of insurance companies, homeowners and firefighters who would get together and make you one of the richest people in Alaska.

I just came back from Costco & drove by Allan Hancock Jr. College. The street for 2 blocks has flowering plum trees spaced about 10 feet apart, all are in full bloom, wish I had had my camera with me. It was a really beautiful sight.

I just have to add that here in Victoria on Vancouver Island the plum trees are coming into bloom too.
Glorious sunny weather today after a month of solid rain & high winds.
I just love winter here..it's almost always gone by February!

McJane,
Loved your pictures! I called my husband down to see your "deer at the bird feeder". He spends his life trying to defeat a conspiracy of squirrels who are after his bird feeders. I told him to come and see his next problem. We live in the city with a fenced yard so the chance of deer at our bird feeders is not going to happen but he did get a laugh out of the idea.
It has been a mild winter here in Maryland but snow is forecast for tomorrow. Does not sound like it will be much. Oh NO! that is when we usually really get it! :-0

otteropp - I went to elementary and high school in Victoria. We lived just behind the Crystal Gardens - that was when it was a huge swimming pool. My father was a chef at the Empress Hotel. This goes way back tho. My sister still lives there
Im in St. Augustine, FL - cooler winters than Miami
