Never heard of it before.
Any collectors out there that know any thing about Fractional Currency. I would appreciate any information.

Saw some on eBay, but all were circulated & not in the greatest condition. The one I'm showing here is clean, crisp & uncirculated.

Here's some links with info about Fractional Currency. Kind of fall's into the same categoy as the Postal Currency. Your 15 cent note is a 4th issue.

Here's a GEM/CU listed on ebay. However this will bring as high as 5-10 times more than your because it has been graded by RGCS. Currency and Stamps that have been professionally graded and inspected fetch premium prices. But there is no doubt in the mind of the buyer what they are getting.

As an authority on Rocky and Bullwinkle, I can tell you that Fractional Currency was popular in the early 1960's. Used exclusively by those of us addicted to Fractured Fairy Tales

...And Then the Prince Knelt Down and Tried to Put the Glass Slipper on Cinderella's Foot
by Judith Viorst

I really didn't notice that he had a funny nose.
And he certainly looked better all dressed up in fancy clothes.
He's not nearly as attractive as he seemed the other night.
So I think I'll just pretend that this glass slipper feels too tight.

It's a nice note. Should fetch around $75 on Ebay.

Thanks for your replies, help, links & Fairy Tales. Helped a lot.

Here is a very nice one with Abraham Lincoln & a little bigger (4&1/4 x 1&3/4) also uncirculated.

Will see if I can find one on eBay.
They look & feel like minature money.

Starting in the Civil War time there was a shortage of circulating coins. Many times stamps were used to give change. There were some merchants that used to make there own coins for change. The governmant did not like this and they started encassing stamps in these tokens. That is when the government started making the fractional currency. There was shortages of silver and copper so they could not make coins the way they needed to. If you read the link about the fractional currency you will see that there were 4 series. The ones you are showing here are 4th series and the most common. By the 1870's they started discovering silver and copper out west so that by the late '70's there were plenty of coins circulating and the need for the fractional currency died out. That is why the 4th series are around in very good quantities and in excellant condition. They hardly ever circulated.

Bill, thanks for the information on Fractional currency.

I have a few uncirculated pieces & it's nice to have an idea of just what they were.

Jane,

No problem I was in the coin business (or should I say professional Numismatics) from 1973 to 1986. Those were the good times!

Curious, what happened after 1986?

Coin business went dead. Inflation was gone and there was not enough things to buy. I sold out and got into the Sport Card Business and was promoting 8 different shows a month until that went dead and I sold them in 1994. Then I went into Real Estate. Been doing that ever since. Started putzing around with yahoo and eBay back in '98 & '99. Started doing that as more of a full time thing last year. Gonna be double nickel next month and it is getting time for me to retire from having to go out and work. I enjoy staying at home and around town going on a vacation when I want to etc. but I have to work to keep myself busy. Don't want to get to old to soon. IN 1976 me and my partner bought a Tandy computer to keep track of inventory. Made up the program for it. Now I have come full circle and using the computer to do my business again. My life in a nut shell.
