And so I cry a little bit (it hurts to be in love) Ah, I die a little bit (it hurts to be in love) Day and night, night and day, it hurts to be in love this way

Yes I Googled it:
"In later years Gene sang some country music, and made some recordings in Italian. Pitney continued touring and performing throughout his life. On April 4, 2006, during a tour of the UK, he performed at St. David's Hall in South Wales and received a standing ovation following the show; his final song that night was Town Without Pity. The following morning he was discovered dead in his bed at the Hilton Hotel in Cardiff, Wales. The cause of death is unknown at this time.
Gene always had a strong voice and was well liked in the music business. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.

When you're young and so in love as we
And bewildered by the world we see
Why do people hurt us so
Only those in love would know
What a town without pity can do
If we stop to gaze upon a star
People talk about how bad we are
Ours is not an easy age
We're like tigers in a cage
What a town without pity can do
The young have problems, many problems
We need an understanding heart
Why don't they help us, try and help us
Before this clay and granite planet falls apart
Take these eager lips and hold me fast
I'm afraid this kind of joy can't last
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two
What a town without pity can do
How can we keep love alive
How can anything survive
When these little minds tear you in two
What a town without pity can do

Still drawing a complete blank! No one I know, over the years, including our younger family members, has ever mentioned the man's name. Odd.

Wasn't the song A Town Without Pity used in a movie a few years ago? Thanks for posting the lyrics and the link, Neglus. I was reading about Gene Pitney and he did have quite a few hit songs in the 60's when you consider how many one hit wonders there were at the time.
He also wrote many songs including Mary Lou for Ricky Nelson, Rubber Ball for Bobby Vee and He's a Rebel for the Crystals which was #1 in 1962 and Pitney's song, Only Love Can Break a Heart was #2 at the time.

I'm seeing Herman's Hermits (well, at least Peter Noone) in concert tomorrow night - one of the younger old geezers.

I saw Herman's Hermit's at a local park district festival a couple of years ago. Peter still puts on a great show. He had a great line that night, " All the oldies groups are easy to book these days. Just go to www.whoisstillalive.com."

Sanmar-you would have to like rock n roll.He was popular along with Roy Obison,Frankie Avalon,Del Shannon,Bobby Vinton, among others who become popular after Elvis went in the Army. When the Beatles come along with "the British Invasion" in 1964,most of these singers went by the wayside.

Sanmar~You surely have seen the old movie ~The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance~ starring Jimmy Stewart, Lee Marvin and Vera Miles.
Gene Pitney sang the title song which was a hit.
