The Ebay star system sure is frustrating.
My feed back is 100% positive with over 2000 feedbacks.
However, the star ratings show about 4.9%.
The buyers can give you great feedback and I will give them positive compliments, as well.
If they rate you with the star system in addition, they can bring you down and you cannot star rate them.
In other words, at the risk of not leaving a neg and taking a chance you will neg them back, they can do it anonymous through the stars, Drat it!

The worst part is that it's usually undeserved. If the post office is slow in delivering, they don't get the gig, you do.
Rate increase? You get the blame.
And like you stated, your feedback is 100%. Sneaky way of zinging you with no recourse.

I agree; I dislike it intensely. All feedback should have the possibility of being reciprocal. This is not only one-sided; it's anonymous!

I'd love to buy some things from one of the higher-ups at eBay and then zing them with those stars.

I agree. I think the star rating is lousy. I am surprised there isn't a star rating regarding the price they paid for the item. Something like - Do you think the item was fairly priced? I am at a 4.7 on s/h fees.

In an attempt to counteract the rating, I have begun to enclose a letter explaining the reason for my s/h fees. My only thought is - if they had a problem with the s/h fees, why did they order the item? I'll post my letter in another post.

I saw your letter kozersky and it's a good letter - but it's a shame that you need to send it.
The star rating is the pits and not worth anything in my mind. I have someone working with me from her home and within an hour of payment - she has it packed and ready for shipping. The first rating we got was 4.5 down the line. NO WAY.

I have the same problem. We mail every weekday, but I live in Canada, and most of my packages go to the US. I always tell sellers that mail takes longer between the countries, they can get held up in customs etc. Also, a lot of buyers think that the postage rate should be the same as within the US, so they zap me on that, even though I often lose on postage, and don't charge any handling fee. I think the one that gets to me most is that some people have downgraded me on communication. There is NO WAY I can improve that, I doubt there is any seller who does better than me, (I am sure there are a lot who are as good). My feedback comments are excellent, but I know that buyers are still downgrading me. I have stopped worrying about it, as long as I am doing my best job, that is what counts.

That's a great way to look at it Amber.
OT - I was shocked the other day when I shipped to Canada. It was a small package - less than 2 oz but thicker than 2 inches. It cost me $1. Same package shipped within the US would have been more than $1.50. Go figure. Amber maybe you should switch to jewelry? Did I say that??

ladyjewels: No, I am not into jewelery. One of the first rules I tell people who want to start selling on eBay, is "Sell what you know". I am into crafts, especially knitting, so I can answer questions, and I know exactly what I am selling. Our postage is very high, but the funny thing is (well not so funny) is that in most cases, it is cheaper for me to mail to the US than within Canada. I can't mail a package to British Columbia for less than $11.99, however small, that includes one skein of yarn. Needless to say, most people don't want to pay that.

Although I am primarily a seller, I am in the unique postition of viewing a certain transaction as a highly disgruntled buyer.
Currently in the devil's advocate role:
I get to leave honest verbal feedback comments ~
seller didn't get back to me to resolve issue until I sent three inquiries (zero stars for communication)
item significantly not as described
(zero stars for item description)
shipping?
wants me to pay to ship back item
(zero stars for reasonable/fair shipping)

This star system could be dangerous!!!!!
(btw, this is from a powerseller with several thousand feedback who, for the most part, only posts fb that are neg and neutral ~ about 50% neg/neutral, about 80% doesn't bother to leave at all)

so tempting...........
