I am able to reach the deep recesses now of this house. My grandparents wines. I have a bottle of Saki labeled occupied Japan. We can date it. Now what? I have some other wines etc that are just as old. Anyone have any clues what to do with this stuff besides drink or dump it?

TIA

Does the wine and saki have labels?

If so, they could be highly collectible.

yes the labels are in great condition.

Saki KIKU - MASAMUNE and says some other stuff in english and in Japanese

No Date MADE IN OCCUPIED JAPAN

I asked a local wine merchant and he thinks I have junk. He didn't have too much time to go through the list I gave him. Oh well.

QUOTE: "I asked a local wine merchant and he thinks I have junk."

say it ain't so!

I wouldn't just take their information for it. I had a comic book - Spider Man I think - that came with an LP. I read up on Ebay and I knew that there is a "grade" with comics. So I went to my local comic book store to see if they would grade it and/or give me an estimate on it and the guy said it was worthless.

I listed it and got quite a fair price for it.

OH - and you might want to spell it SAKE instead of Saki.

thank google http://www.kikumasamune.com/

I'm surprised haha hasn't been by here yet with her opinion

Surely it's legal to sell wine (even old wine) on eBay? Or not? If it were mine, I'd do a couple of test auctions with some nice bottles and see what happens.

I don't think it's legal to sell wine on ebay. You need a license to do that and different states have different laws etc.

No, it just a plain full bottle of sake with the label on it. It's sealed etc

As a former wine store owner of twenty years, and one who still maintains a small wine cellar, I have some advice.

(1) Do not depend upon your local store for any advice as to value or collectible value. They depend upon price lists from a distributor to determine selling price. What you have there is too old for current price lists.

(2) Why the rush to sell, or dispose of the wine? After all it is from your family. The concern you should have is for proper storage. Read up on requirements for storage.

(3) Do not listen to advice from anyone here as to disposing of the wine. As long as the bottles have been stored properly, there is an excellent chance that the wine is and will remain palatable.

(4) Inventory what you have and then search online as to value. If it is good, the wine will only further increase in value as it ages.

Thanks Bill, I I truly appreciate your input. It has been stored properly. Atleast since I have had ownership of it. The rush is because I really need to space and could really use the cash. I have no idea where to start researching where to sell this stuff. Researching the price, I can do. Researching where to sell it, is going to be difficult. Ebay is out. Crossing state lines is out too. So, where to go? If you have any clues, please let me know

Again, I appreciate all of the wonderful info. Thanks again very much

There are a few web sites. I think I still have the info at home. I'm in Las Vegas now. When I get home Friday night, I'll post something for you.

I'm staying at the Wynn on the 33rd floor, overlooking the strip and valley. Great view!

One site I do recall is Cellar Exchange. Try this link - http://www.cellarexchange.com.

If there is a Japanese restaurant run by Japanese (not Chinese or other Asians) or a Japanese supermarket(which is even rarer ),you can show them these sake bottles and hear what they have to say?
They may buy them from you for display, after all, they are in the business of serving Sake.
