I tried to buy a computer off Craig's List. I was willing to pay the asking price, was willing to pay cash. Emailed the seller and provided my phone number as requested. The seller never called but finally emailed that the only possible way we could arrange pick-up/delivery was for him to drop by my place at night. I suggested instead that we meet in a busy Fred Meyer parking lot in my neighborhood, in front of the key kiosk. He never replied. Was I being unreasonable? I ended up making arrangements with another seller. She's in my neighborhood and I can pick up the computer tomorrow at 5:50 PM - have to pay $40 more though.

Definitely not unreasonable. I have agreed to have buyers pick up on local items for things I sell on Ebay. NEVER at my house. At a Mall, at a McDonalds, etc., but not at my house.

It surely doesn't sound good to me, either. You were wise to get out of it.

Sometimes people are just flakes with no particular evil intent, but it's best to be cautious.
I listed some stuff on Kijiji, changed my mind and decided I didn't want strangers in my house after all, and put the things out by the curb with a FREE sign.

Update: We got the computer last night. My son wasn't able to get connected to the internet. I checked and found the driver for the network adapter was corrupt. Told him I'd fix it this AM. Bored, he ran a virus scan. We woke up this morning to find a worm. I was able to reinstall the driver and hopefully got rid of the worm. This wasn't as easy as I thought it'd be.

New computers are so cheap these days I wouldn't even bother buying a used one.
I wouldn't want strange people coming to my house either. It's bad enough trying to get rid of the JW's.

It'd be hard to find a new 1.9 GHz 512 MB RAM computer with Windows XP Pro and MS Office installed for $125. No peripherals were included (thank God, I already have too many monitors in my garage). Now I'll have a decent spreadsheet to work with corrupted eBay downloads. Never did like worms, though. The Craig's list computer (now that I've invested 2 hours in it) works much slicker than the cheapie I bought new a year ago.

I'll bet there are all kinds of too-good-to-be-true iPod deals on craigslist, too.
Really, though, how do you know it wasn't stolen?

First, it wasn't a too-good-to-be-true price, it's on the low-end of going rate for similar used computers. No guarantees that it wasn't stolen, neither do I get a guarantee that jewelry bought off eBay isn't stolen. The person selling advertised locally, was open to various pick-up/delivery options, freely gave their home telephone number that wasn't a throw-away cell. I would hate to think there is no market for used computers for fear that a bulky $125 piece of equipment is stolen.

Earlier this month I decided to look for a used car on Craig's list - just need a reliable car for my "post office/grocery store/shopping/have lunch with friends" forays in the non-cyber world to get by until we are free from college tuition and loans.
The first ad that attracted my attention was for a late model Honda in my (cheap) price range. I emailed the seller and his response started with: "I currently am in England and need to sell this vehicle..." Had NIGERIAN SCAM written all over it. Too good to be true.
I emailed many sellers and most deals sounded like they were on the "up and up" (I set my sights a little lower after the first one) In the end we decided to wait while our mechanic's friend finds us a car at an auction.
From what I saw, as long as one is cautious, Craig's list can be a great place to transact business.

I guess I'm just thinking of the contrast between 1) ordering a new unit from Dell and 2) meeting a stranger in Fred Meyer's parking lot to do a cash deal.

Dell has a special going on now for $379. Includes a 19" flat monitor and Windows XP.
Can't get much cheaper than that for a new PC.
And I read in the news today that Microsoft is giving oems only 5 more months to sell Windows XP.
