I have come across a hoard of postcards, many are loose but there are quite a lot stuck into albums with the old black pages. Of course, those are the best cards!

Somewhere a while ago I read that there was an almost magic way of removing the remnants of the album pages without harming the cards?

I seem to be suffering from either the fact that I used to be blonde or my age is catching up with me!

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If they are real photos, you could try soaking the postcards in water (I've never had the courage to try this). I don't know of any magic way, but recommend eBay guide Nip & Tuck, first aid for postcards eBay Guide as an excellent resource guide.

I haven't tried it, but I once read that if you put the album in a freezer overnight the postcards will come out easily the next day.

I don't know of an easy way. I did try soaking RPPC and found out two things the hard way:

1) Don't work with the postcard when it is sopping wet! It will tear VERY easily.

2) Ink runs

Now I just leave the black paper on and note it in the description and show a scan.

I think I read someplace that hairdryers might work (especially if the glue is wallpaper type glue).

I have tried dabbing a little water on postcards when another paper is stuck to the top with some success (the idea is to get the offending paper wet but not the postcard).

My thanks to you all!

I think that the idea that I had heard was the one Neglus mentioned using a hairdryer. I shall try all the remedies to see if anything works.

Pixiamom I will check out the Guide on eBay as I know very little about cards but seem to have been building a collection over the past few months and I am so fascinated by them that I think I have just found a new hobby!

One of my favourite cards so far was one that sounded like my own Mother could have written it way back in England before we had telephones and we used to write letters. On the back all it said was:-

'Just to let you know we are still alive. Love Mother"

An alternative on the hair dryer method might be using a warm iron on the back of the sheet of paper on which the postcard is stuck. (Have never tried it, but it just occurred to me.)

My husband and I just got done with this same problem. I had bought several photo albums with postcards in them. They had been in the albums over 30 years and were stuck tight. We took the photo albums apart and tore all the plastic off the pages. By letting air to the postcards some came off that way. I then separated the pages and took a hairdryer and got the postcards real hot and removed them. I heated some from the front and some from the back. The freezer thing don't work. And some we removed with sharp knife. We still have a few pages to go. Anybody to put postcards in a sticky page photo album should have their butt kicked.

Pixiamom, Thank you for referring me to the Nip Tuck Guide on Postcards. I have read it, printed it out and will use it as a guide for sure.

I have spent most of my day 'playing' with my new toys and can see why you & Neglus are fascinated by old postcards!

I went through one pile and was on a world tour and even came across one from Jersey, in the Channel Islands which is where I lived for a number of years as a child!

All of this started some months ago I bought a box lot of china & misc at our local auction and in the very bottom I found an envelope with pristine early 1900's postcards. Then of course, I found some more and more and now I am hooked!

You have all been so kind and I thank you...if I tire of my new found hobby then of course...up they go for sale but I don't think it will be for a long time, I am having too much fun!

Otteropp,

I found a terrific postcard site for the Metropolitan Postcard Cllub of New York
http://www.metropostcard.com
I especially like the Publishers and topicals sections.

I also found a message on the back of one of my cards that really tickles me, it was a continuation of a letter started on other cards (wish I had them!), excuse the caps:

BUT YOU KNOW HOW A MAN MUST FEEL WHEN THE MORE I MAKE THE MORE THEY HAVE TO SPEND. I BROUGHT HOME 28.00 DOLLARS LAST NIGHT FOR MY WEEKS PAY AND I JUST HAVE 1.00 OUT OF IT AND I WILL BET DOLLARS TO DOUGHNUTS SHE WONT HAVE 28 CENTS WHEN SHE GETS HOME TONIGHT. I TELL YOU ITS DISCOURAGING.
