A friend has a gorgeous old tea set. Of course we have no idea what the mark says. Thanks in advance. ~Adele

to show it properly, you need to rotate it 45 degree to the right.
They are Kansii characters (CHINESE ) but your tea set could be Japanese or Chinese,so a picture will help.
My guess is that your friend teaset is Chinese.

I just looked through the Gotheborg site and didn't see it - you may want to take another look - it's a great site for oriental ceramics - if you think it's worth it, he does quick email consultations for $15:

I doubt any Ebay seller will pay $15 to appraise a teapot?
Unless it is 18th c Meissen.

So, hwahwa, if you can read these characters, would you mind telling me what they say?

I guess with HwaHwa you get what you pay for - maybe they actually would like to know the name of the maker, perhaps that is what makes the difference in selling prices - giving the most specific details possible. Rather than saying Old Chinese Teaset....

hwahwa asked for a picture so she could tell Chinese or Japanese - perhaps the signature is not enough to tell? Don't you have a picture you could put up Roadsmith?

I'm heading down the mountain today for some appointments. Later on I'll post some photos of the items.

This is japanese, look for signs such as kimono and cherry blossom.
Chinese has peach tree and the Chinese robe is different.
Now since it is Japanese, you should be able to trace the maker.

It's lovely - it is usually called Satsuma, but some may say it is not technically Satsuma, but I would have no problem using that in the title - do a completed search for Satsuma tea set - there's one similar to yours that sold for $155. Yours was made in the Meiji period (1868-1912). Good Luck with it!
