Big news here in NE Indiana gas went below $4.00.

My big question is why when the price of crude goes up the next day or even within hours the price at the pump goes up but if the price drops it takes a week or more to go down?

And is it just me but if the price of crude goes up $1.00 it goes up at the pump .10 cents. Crude drops $16.00 and the price at the pump only goes down 10 cents.

Refiners go by 'posting price' of their feedstock-west texas intemediate, heavy crude from Saudi or Venezuela or domestic.
So when you hear crude price whether it is Texas sweet or Northe Sea crude at such a such a price traded on the commodity exchange, this is not what the refiners pay.
There is a lag between what is traded on the exchange and what is posted on the refiner board,so when crude drops sharply, the posting price does not follow immediately and the refiners will still be paying a higher price.
I hope this helps.

I think I'll move to Minnesota with that price. I am happy to say that I never had to pay over $4 - we hit $3.97 as a high here on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. I drove up to Connecticut the other day and it was $4.40! I made it to New Jersey luckily before I had to fill up and kept my under $4 streak alive.

$4.46 here. We drove to Fairbanks this weekend for their annual Golden Days celebration. Up north of Denali National Park, before you get to Fairbanks, gas was $4.99 a gallon.

Gas here in NJ has never really been over $4.00. Some gas stations offer cash price at $3.75 right now. And we CAN'T pump our own. I don't even know how to pump gas and like it like that!!

I was shocked...just drove by an EXXON and it was $3.79/gallon

We have several grocery stores now promoting discounts. MARTINS -- for every $100 in groceries, you get 20˘/gallon(limit 30 gallons - one stop) discount at their pumps. I love that, no limit on the discount, I think the most I have received is $1.00 off/gallon. But with an AVALANCHE and 36 gallon tank...it pays off.

Now that we're conditioned to 4 dollar gas, we all celebrate when it drops a few pennies below 4 bucks. We buy extra. We plan trips. We hit the gas a little more and don't feel so guilty about tailgating. We're all just a bunch of lab rats, eagerly responding to the stimulus given to us by big oil. We deserve high prices, and will continue to get them in increments. Remember not long ago when you were bitching about TWO dollar gas? And your income of course has increased accordingly, right?

It's not under $4 everywhere: here in Ventura, CA it's plummeted to a mere $4.23 at the cheap station, down $4.57 a couple weeks ago. I'm not holding my breath for another such drop.

We DESERVE high prices??? The only ones who DESERVE them are the ones who cried about offshore drilling and drilling in Anwr - wish they were the only ones who had to pay for their ignorance. But unfortunately, we all do. Look what happened just by lifting one ban on drilling - the price dropped. Go figure....

There are only TWO people on this planet who are saying that the drop in oil prices has anything to do with the partial lifting of the drilling ban; President Bush and his mini-me John McCain, who has admitted publicly that he doesn't understand the economy. Any serious study of the issue will show that the drop in prices is due to decreased demand, just like it always is. It has NOTHING to do with lifting the ban. It will be many years before any of that oil affects prices in any way and to think otherwise is dreaming.
Americans will continue to deserve high gas and oil prices until we as a collection of voters INSIST that alternatives to fossil fuels be found and heavily promoted and refuse to vote for these oil company flunkies who claim to represent us. If oil companies could drill all along the coasts and all over Alaska and in all our back yards the prices would still be dictated by what China, India and the other oil hungry emerging economies are willing to pay, and they are willing to pay WHATEVER it takes to ensure their oil supply. Big oil will always sell to the highest bidder.

There is a silver lining in higher gas prices. Demand decreases and that is a good thing for the environment.

Offshore is not the answer. We are oil junkies. Time to sober up .

More fuel efficient cars would be a start but that will take time since the life cycle of cars is about 15 years now. But we have to get started.

The government throws all this big money at the oil companies for "exploration" They should toss everyone a few bucks to put up a windmill and/or solar panels to run our houses and to charge our future electric car. A windmill will cost $75,000 and the windmill company said I would need two. Any help from the government? Not even a dime! Money better spent on Fannie and Freddie bailouts so the top execs can keep the fat salaries for poor management…. sorry got off track.

Gee we vote an oilman into office and we are shocked at oil prices hmmmmm.....

We the people need to wake up and shake it up.

ALL you whiners,wake up!
Europeans and Asians have been paying $5 gas for many years.
All you can eat buffet does not exist in Japan,Europe until recent years.
In Japan, they would have all you can eat buffet with a time limit-45 minutes.
When I was in Japan for business a few years ago,I stayed at a small business man 'hotel'(Tokyo is expensive and these hotels more like YMCA are for business folks coming into town from outlying area and cant afford the Nikkos).
For around 10 US dollars, breakfast buffet consists of traditional Japanese breakfast items plus sphagetti and scrambled eggs,no one waste food,no one leave the food on the plate and go back and get a second plate and third plate etc.
There is no sweet low on the table,I dont recall meeting any fat Japanese!

We should have had $5 gas back in the '70s. If we had, by now, we'd have entirely different transportation, consumption patterns, etc.

Europe has had high gas prices for a long time, and compare their rail systems to ours and their automobiles to ours.
