My 19" LCD Flat Panel monitor died last night. No crackle, no pop - just black screen. A visit to Best Buy confirmed that back light was gone and would cost more to fix than new monitor.

Best Buy only carries wide screen monitors! UGH. I bought one, set it up and can't believe how bad my store (and other ebay pages) looks with my new wide screen format!

How many of you use Wide-Screen?

I bought a 22" wide screen Westinghouse. Took it home and set it up. Anything round on screen became egg shaped. Thank goodness there is a control setting for regular screen. I now have a 19" diagonal picture on my 22" inch monitor. Waste of money.

We bought a 19" about 6 months ago, I didn't like it at first, and there is a % mark at the bottom of my screen which I kept it on for a while, then I decided to go back to the 100%. It takes a little while to get uses to, but now I love it. It is great if you want to do a split screen.

Neglus,
How big is your screen? I have had a 22" CT Screen for six years and the color is going so I have actually been lusting after a 26" wide screen for several reasons. The biggest reason is that I want to be able to have two different sites/programs up at the same side by side. I am assuming that if you have an internet browser up and filling the wide screen that there must be distortion. Kinda like when you are watching a TV formatted video on a wide screen and you make it stretch to fill the screen, all the people sort of get short and fat. I kinda like doing that to Brad Pitt :=)

Anyway, surely there must be a way to have the page display in the aspect ratio that it is created in. Not much help I guess but I am interested to hear how this pans out (no pun intended) cause like I said, I am needing a new one too.

Upgraded the graphics card($60 or so)....added a 17" flat panel right next door to my 19" flat panel...

Reset the settings and the mouse can travel across both screens. Works great if using Vendio (SMPro) to create batches to list and the other screen is either eBay - news - community.

Also saves clicks and "shrinking" screens if searching both on AMAZON and EBAY....

This may be off the topic, but I was out of the country recently and my friend lent me a laptop with WIFI setup.
Each morning I just find out whose account is available and not guarded,so I will use it to go online and sign on to IE,from there I access www.aol.com to retrieve my emails.
Can I do this here?

hwahwa, you can do it anywhere but be aware that you are exposing your personal data anytime you link up with an unsecured wireless connection.

Most commercial areas will have free hotlinks that are provided for their customers convenience. Places such as major hotels, restaurants, etc. these are usually safe connections. In many residential areas you can find unsecured wireless signals too but some of these are left open intentionally so the connection owner can grab your security info. Here you are surfing at your own risk.

There is still controversy as to if using an unsecured connection is legal or not. Some liken it to steaing cable. Some states have ruled it as bandwidth theft and do prosecute. On the other side of the debate are people who are campaigning for gree open internet access in public areas.

Neglus, we have not upgraded to a 22" yet but we have 3 systems in the house and each one has a different quality monitor.

It is interesting to see how ebay pictures vary between them. The desktop 19" has the poorest quality. The Dell laptop has the best and the HP laptop is acceptable.

Once you notice it, you can better understand why some buyers complain about product quality. No matter how much trouble you take to capture quality pictures, some buyers can not see the detail because of their monitors.

On the other hand, if you have a bad monitor, you may not be able to tell that your pictures stink or that the passable mistakes in your photo editing can be glaring on a better screen.

Hello, Neglus. I saw your post about monitors and thought I'd respond as I went through the same thing a few months ago.

I bought a 19" widescreen -- and hated it. I thought it would be an neat upgrade. Instead it was a real eyesore. Anyway, happily went back to my 2003 Dell UltraSharp 17". I love it. No comparison.

Dell, BTW, still sells non-widescreens. They have the Dell UltraSharp 1708FP 17-inch for about $200 (rave reviews) or the 19", etc. These monitors are height adjustable, and tilt sideways 360 degrees so you can see all angles of something. Comes in handy when you're trying to look at auction photos on eBay.

Good luck w/ your decision.

Ok, think about this... even though you may not use a wide screen, your buyers might, and imagine what their screen shots look like? Now think about them wanting to return the item b/c they thought it was egg shaped, but now it is round... oh the seller headaches. lol.

I might be missing something, but a widescreen monitor should NOT be distorting the geometry of your photos. When you said round looking egg-shaped I realized what you were referring to.

I always chuckle when I see widescreen TVs set to show older aspect ratios as stretched; that's fine if that's what you want, but you are not forced to do so.

Set the display width via Control Panel to the proper pixel count, and you should be fine. Most monitors have a "preferred" resolution that should be easy to find on the web or in the owners' manual.

Thanks all. I already bought the widescreen monitor. I have adjusted the resolution to the one shown on the box (could not find a preferred even though I installed updates to my NVIDIA program (the manual just said to update NVIDIA and check off "preferred".

The thing that surprised me the most was how my listing page looked - very wide when I thought it was about 800 pixels wide (as seen on my old monitor). I use a Vendio custom template and I think it must stretch to fill the screen. It looks kind of strange with a little tiny graphic at the top. If I use a wider graphic, then the user with a non-wide screen monitor would have to scroll to see the whole listing. Not a major problem but something to think about.

My guess is that most users are still using CRT monitors.

I wouldn't use a browser window that stretches all the way across the screen. One of the benefits of a wide screen is that you can have more windows available horizontally. I fixed the sentence, but I first said "more widows available horizontally" which is an opportunity of an entirely different sort.

24" iMac,also have a 22 inch cinema display on another machine, everything looks great. Cash is right. If round things look egg shaped, your settings are goofed up.

So, I am confused. On my 22 inch CRT I can “grab” the edge of a window, hold down the left mouse button and change the horizontal size of the page with no distortion ie the page just gets narrow and you have to scroll. I was hoping that a 26" wide screen would allow me to have two full screen windows up at the same time. What say you guys who already have larger wide screens?
Peace,
Don
