Now that the dust has settled on some of the Best Match glitches, I've noticed that Best Match handles Auction listings and BIN listings very differently. Auction listings are still semi-sorted with Ending Soonest on top, free shipping and having a bid moves the listing up considerably more. BIN listings are semi-sorted with Newly Listed on top. There seems to be an advantage given to BIN listings with free shipping over Auction listings with bids: a BIN listing with free s/h - 26 days left is on top of an auction with 3 bids that closes in 17 minutes. Has anyone else noticed this? Does Best Match vary by category?
Edited to add: how does this affect my listing strategy? I guess I will continue to list unique items with upside potential in auction format, list less unique items as BIN, 30 day, free s/h (with the price jacked up to cover my cost - we'll see how it works).

I noticed something interesting tonight while trying to research a piece.
I was in the new search with default to best match while looking for antique alabaster. I noticed that there were not many lamps listed which was unusual because this search is usually full of lamps. I opted out of the new search and all the lamps appeared.
Makes me wonder just how many listings are getting NO visibilty.
I did the same types of searches on 14k gold earrings -(plated,plate,filled,gf,hgf,hge) with radically different search returns as well.

On FP listings the one thing that will increase your visibility in Best Match is to sell multiple quantity items. In my Postcard CD category I see several of my listings on page one with at least one always in the top 5. In looking back it seams that any item that sells 3 or more is near the top. I do not offer free shipping; so in my case I don't see an advantage in changing shipping preferences. Do a search on "postcard Pa" for examples

Wow, Chuck, you're right. A few from the top with 1700+ found and 18 days left - pretty impressive!

There is also the variable of what and how an individual searches for on a regular basis. Best match takes that into consideration and shows you what it thinks you might want based on your passed search history.
10 different people could search for the same item and come up with 10 different results.
There is no way to know that what your seeing is what your buyers are seeing.

Interesting observation. I'm going to test it.

Results: Doesn't work. I tried looking at the Best Match results with three different IDs. In no case did the multiple-quantity listings even appear on the first page of results. In fact, they appeared below my own single-quantity listings.
One example (Chuck's) does not a general rule make, unfortunately.

According to eBay Chuck is right - the placement of multiple quantity items improves each time a sale is made. This is true even when the listing renews (GTC) - but members have observed that ONE revision will send the listing back down to the bottom.
Unfortunately this won't work for OOAK sellers.

But Chuck didn't say each time a sale is made, he said multiple-quantity.
I knew about the sales history feature.

He did say in his category (postcards? though CDs are technically not paper) you move to top with three sales: "In looking back it seams that any item that sells 3 or more is near the top. I do not offer free shipping; so in my case I don't see an advantage in changing shipping preference"
Since there aren't very many multiples for sale in the PC category perhaps this isn't as easy in other categories:

Hmmmm. I searched on sterling earrings. 32,000+ found. On page 1- a BIN listing with 9 days left. Quantity available: 5 Sold: 0 Edited to add: never mind. It looks like it is newly listed 10-day BIN.

In looking back at sales it appears that single sales of identical items from different buyers moves my listings up. I am not certain that orders of multiple items from a single buyer does. There is also my favorable dashboard rating that helps.
