I received this email from a buyer I guess you call her a knowledgeable buyer???

My helpful buyer wrote me:
hi, this bracelet is a common counterfeit. taxco never used the eagle head in their jewelry. they used the whole eagle. it isn't sterling. it was sold to unsuspecting tourists by the 1000's. just thought you should know. you can verify this in ebay's jewelry community. i've been told magnets stick to this. magnets aren't suppossed to stick to sterling.

here is my auction listing,
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260304073040

I wrote her back

Hi, This bracelet is not a counterfeit it also does not have any eagle hallmark. it is marked on the back in the middle of the bracelet Hecho en Mexico in a circle area. and on the end where the bracelet hooks it is also marked Sterling and 925 and taxco so I am sure this is not what you say it is plus this came from a Jeweler who handles all texco/mexico jewelry only. Also a magnet does not stick to this since it is all sterling silver. Tonimar1

I've seen that bracelet (the design, I mean) on the jewelry board. I'll see if I can find a recent thread.

Do the marks really say "Mexico DF" and "Taxco?" Because that doesn't make sense. Unless DF is the artisan's mark and not the Distrito Federal.

yes it says Hecho en Mexico, DF and it has a C in a circle which I always thought to be a copyright

Sorry, I can't find any of the threads I remember. I wish they wouldn't purge them so quickly.

I have seen that design discussed though so I do believe it is a commonly counterfeited item, which might explain why the helpful buyer was so helpful. Not saying yours is fake, not at all, just can understand why someone might think so.

The DF must be initials because Taxco is in the state of Guerrero, not the DF.

Your bracelet in black:

eBay item 360099925694

Her's has Alpaca (although she can't seem to read it on her bracelet) on it, which means it is not sterling silver even though she claims that it is.

I'd have it tested, Toni.

Your knowledgeable buyer is an idiot.

I don't want to scare you, toni, truly, but you should be aware of eBay's Trusted Reporter program. As you probably know, right now anyone can report a listing and claim that an item is counterfeit.

There are lurkers in other categories (such as luxury watches) who routinely report genuine items as bogus. This is causing a huge problem for sellers of high-end goods because eBay assumes that anyone who cares enough to report it must be telling the truth. What's worse it that it seems the more reports are filed the more trusted the reporter is.

I'm not surprised the idiot pointed you to eBay's jewelry community -- that's what happens in these situations. The "Trusted Reporters" are usually denizens of a subject matter group (whether it's jewelry, luxury watches or designer handbags) where many statements are taken as gospel and passed around like Holy Writ. Well, if enough people say it, it must be true, right?

It gets truly absurd when there are a few sellers on eBay who have literally written the book -- the definitive guide to their collectible, accepted as the industry standard -- and their auctions are turned in by idiots like yours.

Forgot to add, you spelled Taxco (Texco) wrong in the listing.

toni - Listen to Fluffy. Yours is much nicer than the example I gave. That was just to show that this person is probably seeing auctions like that one and applying it to yours. I'd show a photo of the mark just to be safe. They are reporting listings right and left and eBay just takes them down without even really looking at them.

If I had the money right now, I'd call that bracelet mine. I love it!

thanks zippy I made the correction.

Fluffy your so right,

Before anyone emails a seller telling them there item is counterfeit they should at least have more knowledge then this buyer is displaying and yet like you say all it takes is for them to report the auction, wow, my life is in the hands of an idiot, how scary is that.
