eBay made two mistakes this year. The first was forcing sellers to make changes they were reluctant to make, while the second was shutting down eBay Express.
I think ebay has really made a mistake with the mandated changes these past months. The changes could have been accomplished by rewarding sellers with lower FVFs when listing on ebay Express.
For example, ebay should have never dropped eBay Express. Express could have been the tool that gave ebay the competitive edge with Amazon, and helped increase seller profit.
The main problem with Express was that there were all those shipping fees which a buyer had to wade through. eBay had no hope to make Express popular as long as there were all those shipping fees (many of which were padded).
eBay could have grown Express by the following: (1) free shipping, (2) unified return policy, (3) PayPal only, (4) no links in item descriptions, (5) special listing selected by seller and (6) any other changes that were necessary.
In return ebay could have lowered the FVFs on the items that were selected for Express listing by the seller and sold through Express. There would have been the unified coherent theme which ebay is still searching for, and the sellers could have willingly gone along with such changes because of the lowered FVFs, snd increased exposure.
Further, the auction sellers could have thrived, while store sellers could have maintained their stores with extra exposure through Express, and not have been a vocal resistance to change. In essence three distinct opportunities to sell, buy, and grow.
eBay truly missed the opportunity for growth. What is interesting is that the current changes are being directed by the person who created Express.
