I almost got taken in by a scammer on CL. Luckily I had read the article on scammers that they provide. This #$%@*@ said he had the bank send me the payment but they sent to much but to deduct my amount plus 100. for my trouble and send him the balance which would have been about 1300. I emailed him back and told him I was wise to his scam and to forget it and I would report him. BE CAREFUL OUT THERE !!

Thanks for the heads up. I was thinking of doing some items there. I'll be very careful.
What is the best way to do this? Cash at pick up? Is there another way to stay safe?

As far as I'm concerned, the ONLY & SAFEST way to buy and sell is to meet at a public place, and work with cash as payment. This greatly avoids any issues with walking into unsafe situation, and it eliminates payment scams.

Exactly, Bluefalcon. Meet at a shopping center and with a friend if possible and definitely deal in cash.

ahhh... but perhaps he actually fooled you in a way you didn't even realize. many times, these scammers are really phishing for email addresses to send spam to.

the biggest clue to a scammer is how the email is written. things like:

"i am inquiring to see if the item is still available, the condition, and your best price."

the thing is that you can get hit by 3 or 4 different scammers who word their emails very similarly.

another clue is their phrasing, or spelling of certain words. if it seems like someone writing who doesn't speak english, or uses old english words/spellings... that is huge red flag.

my suggestion... DO NOT RESPOND!!! they are likely trolling for email addresses.

I have received USPS postal orders,3 of them each worth $995 from London.
The scammers have to buy them and it could be someone is printing them in London .
The paper texture is thicker and there is no watermark.
They can also print money orders which are easier to fake as there is no water mark or is there?

Also, if taking cash, it is wise to invest in a counterfeit detection pen as it is easy to pass a bad bill, particularly 100's & 50's, in these situations.
