This dress belongs to a friend and it's been in his family for a very long time. It's linen (I think) and embroidered. The skirt is very heavy, closes with a fabric covered button and is longer in the back (for a bustle perhaps) than in the front. The waste is tiny! Very 3-D. The shirt has an attached cape. The cape attaches by a hook so it can be removed. Does this look Victorian or Edwardian? I'm clueless on this type of thing. Of course, there are brown spots due to age and some seams coming apart here and there. Would this be considered a walking suit?

Off the top of my head it looks Victorian...but I am no fashion expert at all. It is really beautiful.

How gorgeous! I'd be tempted to put it in a large glass framing box and use it for decor.

I'd think some theater costumers would be interested in it.

I would say Victorian as well. When did bustles go out of style? That could be your best clue.

"During the 1880's women kept a very high and peculiar profile
Did You Know?....Probably no fashion of the Victorian Age is as difficult for the modern viewer to understand as the bustle, the dominant form of the 1880's. It was clearly impractical, it can't have been comfortable, and it looks preposterous. In some ways it seems the perfect illustration of Oscar Wilde's quip, "Fashion is something so ugly it has to change every six months," except that the bustle reigned for almost a decade. Without a doubt, it was the most fascinating, silhouette of the Victorian era."

Looks like the bustle was out by 1890.

I think this would have been worn with a bustle. There is a lot of extra material in the back and the back is a lot longer than the front. You can see how the back dips from the photo. I'm guessing 1880's / early 1890's.

Believe it or not, it fits me! Not that I'm happy a garment that hasn't been washed in 100 years fits me. Yuk! I haven't actually tried it on, but the waist measurements are right.

mamachia - Probably on Sunday. I'm working on other photos now. Hopefully someone who can restore items will win it and put it back to it's glorious self. There are a few clumsy repairs and some seams that need to be fixed. I'll post a link once it's up.
