I shipped a shirt early this week. Sent the wrong size by accident. The buyer emails me to tell me that I did so, but then requests that I ship them the correct size and when they receive it, they will return the other one. LOL!
I've never done that, never will. It is ripe for scamming.
I sent them a reply telling them to return the item via USPS Priority Mail w/DC and when it arrives I will return the item, along with a refund for their shipping costs, plus my original shipping fee I charged them (for their inconvenience). I would rather lose my shipping fees of $6.99 than lose a $40.00 item.

I had something like this happen before and the buyer told me that if he returned it without a refund 1st, that I would have the item and the payment.
I told him - well didn't I have both in the beginning anyway?? Some people just don't think.

I had a buyer with private feedback who bought two glass mugs - when he got them he found chips on each (I found none before I mailed them and I look stuff over VERY carefully.) I offered him a full refund with shipping both ways. He refused to return the mugs saying it was too much trouble - I should just send him the refund and he would keep the items. Fat chance....so...he gave me a negative, ruined by 100% positive rating and shot my stars way down. It has been several months and I still get angry when I think about it. I would have felt a lot better if I could have given him a negative also.

Jane,
I had the same thing happen....
he wanted a full refund and he would keep the items. ...
too much trouble to send it back... it was a plastic sign...
{{ put in envelope and address with name and stamps }} ????
he gave me a negative too,
I wonder if it was the same buyer
Just have to shake your head and move on....
I am getting a lot of buyers that are offering $10.00 on a $23.00 item ???
I pay more then that for the item itself and then I get it shipped to me...
Have to wonder ???

They all want something for nothing at this point and Ebay backs them up 95% of the time - they know how to work the scams with Paypal and returns. What a pain in the butt.

If YOU weren't the one who made the mistake, I would agree with you - probable scammer. However, YOU did make this mistake and I would bend over backwards to make it right for the buyer. If he feels more comfortable hanging on to the shirt he received until you send the new one I tend to think this would be alright. Who knows, he may think YOU are the scammer.

Shag, I think that he should trust you since he originally did trust you when he placed his first bid.
But what I would do is send him the money that you are intending to give him and do it in paypal before he ships the item back to you so he has his shipping money.
Remember if he made a claim with paypal stating that the item was not as described and you agree to change it for the right item once he sends back the wrong item paypal will tell him also that he needs to return the item he has and pay to ship it back to you.
I don't see why you need to prove to him that you are a trusted seller when he should already know this by the way you are handling the problem.

He emailed me back and wasn't bothered by it. He mailed the jersey back and said, "it happens." He should know I am an honest seller... 1) he paid me 2) i shipped it the same day 3) he received it two days after payment was made 4) i responded right away 5) I offered to even refund his original shipping fee he paid when he won the auction for his troubles. that was beyond what he expected and shows I'm a good seller.
I have to completely disagree with Neglus on this one. Perhaps Neglus hasn't been burned by someone keeping both items.

If you know you sent the wrong size, I wouldn't worry to much about a shirt. I think it is a valid custermor complaint, so I agree with neglus too.

Yes, shag but you did make the mistake. Why should the buyer trust you anymore than you him?

"Perhaps Neglus hasn't been burned by someone keeping both items."
I'm sure Neglus has been burned every which way one can be burned. She's sold a lot, she's seen a lot and she knows a lot.
To hold this buyer responsible for the sins of previous buyers is unfair, at best.

He wouldn't be holding them responsible for anything, he would be showing he learned a lesson from past mistakes. It bugs me when I see these long lists of rules typed in all caps in auctions - but then I remember that each one of those rules was probably added when that seller was burned by a buyer.
Two years ago, even 1 year ago, I would have said Shag is over-reacting not trusting that buyer - but this is a different Ebay.
Fool me once shame on you, twice, shame on me....
