I heard that it might be a mid week delivery that they skip.

They haven't decided what day yet - they are asking Congress to lift the restriction of requiring a 6 day a week delivery. The News stations have been bantering about Saturday delivery, but others say the lightest day of the week - which i think is usually a Tuesday.

hmmm... and I assume all the postmasters and other USPS salaried workers will be okay with taking a 16.6% pay-cut on their salary for working 1/6th less? (yeah right)

Sorry... but:

1) I have no sympathy for a shipping company that has been constantly raising rates, and gets compensation from taxes. Their financial instability comes mainly because they haven't adapted many of their practices to make them more competitive.

2) I think the economy in general would be hurt even more if written communication was hampered by delays. (will the already desperate banking industry likely extend due dates, with statements taking longer to arrive and checks taking longer to send?)

Oh... and here's a link to CNN's article on it:

From what I understand, they spend nearly 25 million per year supporting Lance Armstrong. They also pay for advertising stamps when they come out. Come on. Do they really need to advertise? Do we not all know where to get stamps. There are plenty of places they'd better consider cutting corners at before knocking off a day.

I didn't realise that you still had a Saturday delivery in the US.

I think it was in the early 1970's ( amber may correct me here) that Canada Post stopped deliveries on Saturdays. We have been on 5 days a week since then. Most mailboxes have no pick up on weekends and just a very few have one pick-up at 9am on Saturday. So...when there is a Holiday weekend it means nothing from Friday morning until Tuesday morning.

No Sat delivery will give buyers one more reason to bust the DSRs but it will give sellers one good reason to take another day off.

Good grief, can you imagine the lines in the PO on Monday morning?

Yes, you are right otteopp, we have no pick-up from midday Friday until Monday. I guess we are used to it. We always make sure any mail is taken to the post office close to midday on Friday to make sure it's not sitting over the weekend, and to catch any payments that may come in close to the time.

USPS blames it on us using emails instead of good old fashion letters to communicate.
Come to think of it,in the last 10 years when the national builders leased lands north, south, east and west of every metro area in the country to build subdivisions, many of us took advantage and move further out,it costs the post office more gas and more time to deliver mail to us but they are not being compensated for that extra efforts.
When I moved to my present home,we have to pick up mail in the post office until they build the mailboxes and hire new drivers to drive for miles to deliver our mail.
It is a lot easier to deliver mail in the city in apt complex and houses closer to each other.
Just my 2 cents.
Growing up in HK,we used to have mail delivered twice a day, morning and afternoon.

chris...

Gotta reverse that thinking....as a seller, you would collect shipping fees but spend ZERO if you use the teleportation chamber to teleport packages to buyers.....

I guess we have got used to the fact in Canada that there are also very few areas where there is still delivery of mail.
We have what is known as 'Super Boxes' on each street. They are very secure (Set into concrete) and we have a box and there are also two parcel compartments that handle small parcels. They put the key for that in our personal box...we take our parcel and put the key back into the outgoing mail slot. Anything bigger than that and we are left a card to go to the local Post Office to pick up our parcel.
We receive no supplies from the Post Office for packing although they do have packing supplies for sale in each Post Office for the person who sends the occassional parcel.

I have to honestly say that we used to complain about mail taking a long time, annual strikes by the Unions of the Posties and the fact that Canada Post was running a huge deficit each year. Over the past 20 years or so that has changed around as they are now run 'like a business' that is responsible to it's customers. Small Franchised Postal outlets are in Malls or Drug Stores and the system overall is much more efficient.

UPS does not deliver on Saturday. If USPS decides SATURDAY is a non delivery day, customers should know it is not us.

If they decide TUESDAY (which seems to be the direction they are going) is a non delivery day .... then it will be a mess.

I think the PO will still be open 6 days a week but no delivery on one day of their choosing.

deur...I agree. Tuesday would seem to be an odd day to choose.
Saturdays would be absorbed into the public's brains and accepted much quicker.

otto,
we have the same system too, with multiple boxes and 4 boxes for packages!
If no delivery on Saturday, then Monday will be a busy day.
And if Monday is a holiday, then Tuesday they will have 3 days of mail to deliver.

Hwahwa,

Yes..that is exactly the scenario we have here. The Post Office's are always busy on Mondays however there is not much delivered on that day because the Post Office hasn't worked for two days. Tuesday's is always a big delivery day.
After the long weekends with no mail for three days it is always busy but in Canada we have had approx. 30 years to get used to it and it's not so bad.

I can remember before that system came in we used to have an 'Annual' Post Office worker's strike with sometimes nothing for weeks until the strike was settled!
I would much rather have a fully functioning system that is not running so far into debt and few if any work stoppages.

If they go for Saturday's it will work the best and pretty soon everyone will get used to it.
