This morning I came back from the store to find the pipe outside my house for my water sprinkler gushing water like a fountain.
We have freezing weather these days and same with tonight and tomorrow and the water freeze and expand and broke the lid .
I called the Fire dept and they came to shut off the water,I went to HOME DEPOT to look for replacement but they dont stock any.
Many people have gone to HD and ended up at Ace Hardware and Moore Supply.
Now my pipe has no top lid,tonight will be cold and tomorrow as well,should I cover the top of the pipe,if so with what?
Moore is not open until Monday,by Monday our freeze will be over,we wil be in the high 50s.
Or should I throw a blanket around the pipe.

I have covered mine in the past with a cardboard box with a blanket over it. I now have a shut off at the lowest point of my system that I can open to drain out the water when a freeze is coming.
I hope your fire department is not the same as my area. It costs $750.00 for them to come out. Luckily I have a shut off on my meter,also on my sprinkler system, and at my house.

Well,my guy who installed the sprinkler system came,there is a one year warranty on parts but he is miserable as hell.
He said we should all be watching local news and telling us to shut off the water on the pipe and cover the pipes as well,so warranty does not apply.Business is lousy for him and some of his regular customers in my area are not evn paying him for lawncare.
I said according to the fireman,all I need is the plastic part of the lid which cost little,he said the gasket could be damaged as well if i want to do it myself go ahead,be my guest and he said he gets so many phone calls and his gas bill is high ,bla bla bla.He wants 140 to replace the whole thing which sits over the 2 pipes.
HE may be right,there are so many weekend plumbers with the blown top at Home depot and they dont sell it,so they all went to ACe and they dont have it and they will all be going to Moore supply which is closed on Sunday.
No,our fire dept did not mention any bill ,if they send me a bill,they should have told me beforehand?or do they?
Now I know,I will cover my outdoor plants,pipes and bushes and drain the water from the sprinkler,my sprinkler pipe has the shut off knot outside like yours,how the heck do we know ,this guy never leave us a menu ,in fact he subcontracted it out.
