Can anyone tell me what this item would be? Across the border is "German American War 1917". In the center is a design showing a figure, a ship in the background and an eagle on top. I think it may be brass and it's about 1 inch in diameter. There are two open pieces on each side. I can't figure out what this might have been originally and hope someone can identify it. Thanks in advance...

Most likely a fob from a watch chain. Not sure.

The bottle cap design around the edge makes me wonder if it might have VFW origin.

Here is a good summation of what caused us to go to war with German in 1917. Also ties into the emblems on your artifact.
