I bot a whole set of Mikasa China this morning. There are black smudges in the white center of some of the plates. They are not scratches. Any ideas on how I can get them off?
TIA

Neva: Are the smudges on top of or under the glaze? If on top of glaze, have you tried the usual soap and water method? If that hasn't worked, others here will have good suggestions, I'm sure. ~Adele

I think they are on top. I tried soap and water, Mr. Clean sponge, and also sprayed Awesome but nothing takes it off. tnx Adele

Mr Clean is very abrasive. Don't use it on anything that will show scratches. It may take a lot of elbow grease, but use Maas or Simichrome polish.

One of the best products I have found for taking smudges off of almost anything is Goof Off. Try a small amount first, to be sure it will not harm. But I swear by that stuff.

Windex also works wonders when you think you might need something stronger.

ITS A MIRACLE !

Simichrome did the trick. Came right off with a little rubbing.

Goof off didn't do anything. I tried that first.

Thanks a lot for your help

Just an after-thought because the dilemma has been solved - I might have tried soaking the item in diluted bleach - could this create more harm?

I tried a little bleach on one plate but it did nothing. I had a 12 piece set of china to do and it was a lot of work but they are sparkling now. Thanks again for your advice everyone.

I run across those nasty black marks quite often. They are usually caused by something metalic rubbing on the plate/bowl/cup surface.
Since the mark is metal, a fine abrasive will always take it off. (provided you rub hard enought)

I am wondering if it caused from the plates being stacked and the one above has metal in the mix and it is causing it
