I am going to be selling yarn in lots of 6 skeins up to 12 skeins. I am trying to keep the shipping cheap, but the flat rate Priority envelopes only allow 3/4" thickness. To go flat rate Priority I would be charging a minimum of $8.05 without insurance even. The parcel post amount for the same thing is about $7.50. Is there any way I am not thinking of to send this safely and keeping it cheap. Thank you!

I put the minimum amount that I am going to sell in a generic box (6 skeins). Just that amount weighs 2 pounds. I can't squeeze more than 5 skeins in a flat rate priority box.

how about non flat rate that big box 12 by 10?
I sometimes will put one box over the other to make it taller,so far so good, try it!
or insert one long box into another one to make it longer.

The folks who sell large rolls of bubblewraps do some sneaky things, they just place them in large plastic bags and stapled them together and they send Fed Exp or UPS which have arrangement for USPS to deliver them.

You definitely do not want to spend the money for a flat rate box for only 2 lbs. Depending on zip code, 2 lbs can go for less than half of that in a #7 box.

The best thought may be to use calculated shipping. Put in the weight & shipping will vary depending on zone. You can include more than one shipping option (priority, flat rate, parcel post). Costs vary greatly depending on zip code.

The wife bought an article of clothing and it came in a really tough I'm guessing water proof plastic bag. I think it was Fedex and shipping was 6.50. Might work for yarn.

The clothing ordered from QVC and HSN always comes in a sturdy plastic bag.

I second Merrie's suggestion below. Make it calculated shipping.

Hello,
I also sell yarn and have found that the plastic mailing bags are cheap ( I double bag) and reliable.
I use the 19x15" size and 1 bag will hold over 2 pounds of yarn and can be shipped Priority or parcel post.

Paula, is that what they are called on Ebay, "plastic mailing bag"? Is that where you get them or can you get them at a brick and mortar store?

Thanks, Niel, but that isn't big enough. Paula, is there a limit to how thick the package can be when you send it Parcel Post?

Hello again,
Search eBay for Poly mailers, plastic mailing bags and/or mailing envelopes.
You need to put the package dimensions into the shipping calculator and specify large package if any side is over 12". No real limit on thickness other than the standard USPS restrictions.

I have some very large tyvek (sp?) envelopes that came from the PO. They are Priority mail, but would hold 4-5 skeins of yard if packed tightly. If you ship straight Priority mail in one of these envelopes, you can ship cheaper than having to use Priority boxes. Don't use the new Padded Priority envelopes, as you say they don't hold much and cost more to ship.

Okay, here are some problems I am running into. I can't get enough yarn into any of the USPS Priority Flat Rate Envelopes. I have so much yarn to sell, that the minimum group that I am listing is 6 skeins. So I am selling 6 - 12 skeins of yarn in a group. I can't even get the 6 skeins in the flat rate envelopes. If I put even 6 skeins into a generic shipping envelope, it is going to take a 15" by 12" envelope. I don't think they are going to treat it as an envelope.

Paula, if you are mailing 2 pounds of yarn in a 19 x 15 bag, that bag is pretty puffy. Are they letting you send it as a large package?

Purchase large TYVEK envelopes and mail parcel post. Or figure filled size of envelope, measure it, and if it's less than 1,728 inches (cubic foot), it will ship Priority Mail at no premium.

just use the USPS mailing tubes,it comes in 2 sizes,it should fit all 6.
If it is too big, just chop it down to size.

How many skeins can you get in a size A regional box? You pay the 2 lb. rate
