I was thinking about this yesterday as I watched Rumsfeld answer questions about the first wave of bombings - how much detail do we need about military campaigns as they are on-going?
Several questions were just ridiculous in that they were asking about specific future targets and groud troop activities. I understand that reporters all have a job to do but do we really want Rumsfeld answering questions like that?

No...of course not.
My husband retired from the AP. You need to remember that those are "money" questions. Journalism is a business...not a calling. The guy with the scoop is the guy with the raise and/or promotion.

It's true they ask stuff that can't safely be answered but the government also won't tell us stuff that the foreign governments already know. They are secretive from shear habit and cussedness.
