There was an excellent broadcast about Cheney on the Fifth Estate tonight on the CBC. It covered his ascent to power, as Secretary of Defense, the Halliburton years and now as Vice-President.

It's set out in an easy to read format by dates of happenings for those who may wish to read it.

kiara,

You are being way too kind in that statement. I haven't watch the Fifth Estate in a while. It is a well produced CBC program. For those who are not familiar with this program, it's a news magazine sort of like 60 Minutes or 20/20. A good show!

Kiara, Thanks for this opportunity to see the real Cheney. I am sure there will be a few that refuse to read this story on him, so I took out a few articles for them to read.

So Cheney is another rich draft (deferment) dodger. Cheney, when asked why he sought draft deferments during the Vietnam war said "I had other priorities in the '60s than military service."

So Cheney is another convicted drunk driver.

Cheney has his first heart attack when he is only 37 years old. Must be a fat slob for that to happen.

Cheney undergoes quadruple by-pass surgery to clear clogged arteries when he is 47. Must be a fat slob for that to happen.

1992
Cheney pays Halliburton, Brown and Root $8.9 million for two studies on how to downsize the military.

1995, OCTOBER: Cheney becomes CEO and Chairman of Halliburton.

During his five year stint at Halliburton, the company wins $2.3 billion in federal contracts, almost double the total of the previous five years, and another $1.5 billion in taxpayer-insured loans.

Halliburton is fined almost 4 million for selling products to Libya that could be used to trigger a nuclear program.

OCTOBER 30, 1997: Halliburton is opposed to the U.S. embargo and lobbies congress against the Iran/Libya sanctions bill.

2000
FEBRUARY: Halliburton opens an office in Tehran while Cheney is still CEO. At the same time, Halliburton ends its presence in Iraq.

2000, AUGUST 16: Cheney quits Halliburton to run as Bush’s vice-president. He exits Halliburton with a stock payoff worth $30 million.

NOVEMBER 2000: NOVEMBER: At 59, Cheney suffers his fourth heart-attack. Must be a fat slob for that to happen.

2001: MARCH 5: Cheney has balloon angioplasty performed at George Washington University Hospital after suffering chest pains.

2002: AUGUST 26: Cheney tells an audience of veterans "There’s no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction [and that he will use them] against our friends, against our allies and against us.”

Selling the nuclear threat became key to convincing Americans to support the war.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Well, I think it would be fair to conclude that Cheney is a drunk, a draft dodger, a crooked businessman, and a LIAR!

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CBC will repeat the airing of this show. If you live near the Canadian border, or have sattelite TV, you should be able to get this show.

Tuesday, October 12, 2004, 10:00 p.m.
Dick Cheney

American Vice-President Dick Cheney's remarkable life story involves the relentless accumulation of power in every form, but what has it involved in terms of costs for others, and what might history's judgement be?

Kiara from your link, AUGUST 26, 2002: Cheney tells an audience of veterans "There’s no doubt that Saddam Hussein now has weapons of mass destruction [and that he will use them] against our friends, against our allies and against us.”

By repeating this message in the same context with 9/11, he led most Americans to believe that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 tragedy. Then during the presidential debate he said, "I have not suggested there‘s a connection between Iraq and 9/11, but there‘s clearly an established Iraqi track record with terror."

That devious use of propaganda to whip Americans into a war frenzy when there was no threat from Iraq is the most infamous act of his Vice Presidential career...even surpassing the Halliburton corruption.

Yep, twelve, that seems to be the case very often with the liberals....like they just can't stand somebody made it to the American dream. Cheney said, during the debate, he had a similar background to edwards. Both self made men. But it's okay for edwards to get rich off the backs of the injured...but not okay for Cheney to do it in business.

And then they also totally ignore that Cheney worked for Halliburton from 1995 to 2000 and was given no bid contracts from the clinton administration too. No...that again is okay...just not when a Republican President does the same thing.

And the Real Power is in the hands of the Yale graduate, President Bush - he's the one that calls ALL the shots...while Cheney adds his enormous experience to the Bush team. No dummy there. Have any of you graduated from Yale with an MBA? I'd bet no one here has. They don't give degrees to dummies. So make all the false statements you wish to....they certainly aren't true.

And then be a hypocrite and think it's no big deal that clinton lied to avoid serving our country...draft dodger too. There were many during the VN war that used LEGAL deferments because of their status.
Clinton avoid the draft and ran off to England where he participated in the anti-war protests against his own country. Just like kerry did here. Didn't bother the dems to have clinton as president....but some one who actually served in our Armed Forces, like President Bush, and who was given an honorable discharge, it raked over the coals. Oh yea, that's not playing favortism at all.

With a C average at the best he had no business even being at Yale.

Correction of your facts, linda... LOL.

Bush's admission to Yale was based on the fact that his father attended Yale University....not on his scholarship as most students must rely. Without this "legacy admission" and an SAT score of only 1240, his application would have been tossed into the trash. He was a "C" student. That grade point average is considered by most students at Yale, a failure.

After receiving his MBA from Harvard he spent the next ten years drinking..He stopped drinking alcohol in 1986.

Thanks, Yeager. During the show they referenced the website because they couldn't possibly chronicle all the events in one hour. They did focus on the "big lie" about the war and some of Cheney's statements and not about his heart. They also focused on this and the follow-up:

In The State of the Union Address President Bush repeated a rumour that Iraq had recently purchased uranium from Africa. Joe Wilson, a former ambassador to Africa knew that it wasn't true.

"It become clear to me that there's been a deliberate attempt on the part of some of the members of government to deceive the U.S. Congress and deceive the American people ... deceive the world as to the nature of the threat posed by Saddam's nuclear program."

http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/dickcheney/vice2.html

They said it was difficult to flunk out of Yale yet Cheney managed to do it twice. He was a good looking guy but I noticed the transformation right after he got into the White House and that's when he started to comb his hair flat to his head and develop the perpetual sneer.

They showed a pic of when Cheney met Rumsfeld and they both looked like greasy younger versions of their present day selves. Cheney didn't look fat, I think it was all that grease and snake oil that clogged his arteries and his heart turned so black and evil that his own body kept trying to reject it.

Twelvepole and Linda_K, this is not jealousy of what you call a "self-made man", nor is it a discusssion of Clinton. I know you're not interested in facts but perhaps read the web pages and then come back and discuss it when you become more informed about the true Cheney.

Makes you wonder why they then hate Theresa Kerry....Oh , I know why....she was "handed " her wealth

but DICK and bush worked and slaved 12-18 hour days of back breaking labor , starving and saving every little scrap of food and going without life's necessities , living in hovels and then by just pure hard work they became rich!

What a pathetic attempt at ignoring the facts.

One has only to look at the business ventures Bush ran into the ground to know the truevalue of his MBA, I'm afraid. He was grandfathered into Yale & couldn't have made it in on his own. While he was there he was a "C" student who obviously either didn't bother or was unable mentally to take advantage of being there to learn anything substantial.

Linda,

Please do understand that I am not jealous of anyone who is rich. Being jealous in any matter only reveals one's low self worth. Before you use the word rich, you have to understand the word "rich" is very subjective. A person who makes 20,000 a year might think a person making 50,000 a year is rich. And a person making 50,000 might think a person making 100,000 a year is rich. Now you understand that "rich" is subjective in meaning.

One thing about you, Bear........ you do display your ignorance here and you almost like to flaunt it blatantly each time you don't have a "bash Kerry" C&P to post.

You don't seem to realize that whatever the US does affects the rest of the world and it's time that some of you took notice and that includes your stubborn, uninformed and incompetent leader and his buddies. Their actions have harmed a good many people and it's time for it to stop.

Perhaps this will inform you even further:

"With an estimated 600,000 American expatriates living north of the 49th, Canada has a higher population of Americans living within its borders than either the District of Columbia or Wyoming."

IOW, crawl out of your little bunker in the hills, look around you at the real world and breathe some reality.

Linda honey,

Is that all you can do is respond with sarcasm?

I can understand why she, as a Canadian or any other citizen of any country would be concerned. When the world military power, (the US) has demonstrated that it can single handedly invade another country without any real reason, then there is a real reason to be concerned. Especially when the US is being directed by a former drunken, crack head that is too stubborn to believe the reports that there was no WMD's.
