Conservatives Tout Anti-Hillary Book By MARC HUMBERT, Associated Press Writer
Mon Jun 20, 3:37 PM ET
Conservative groups are promoting a Hillary Rodham Clinton biography that hits bookstores Tuesday as a work so damning it could destroy any possible bid for the presidency in 2008.
The 305-page book, "The Truth About Hillary: What She Knew, When She Knew It, and How Far She'll Go to Become President," by Edward Klein, portrays the New York senator as a ruthless and ambitious woman who would stop at nothing to protect her husband's presidency and promote a Clinton II administration headed by her.
While promotional material from Sentinel books, a conservative imprint launched by the Penguin Group, promises a work that "contains shocking new accounts of key moments in Hillary Clinton's private and political life," the book relies heavily on earlier works about the former first lady.
"She's been written about so frequently that it's impossible not to cover some of the same ground," Klein told The Associated Press in an interview Monday. He said, however, that the book contains plenty of new material and insights.
There are 30 pages of end notes, many of which cite those previous works as grist for Klein's coverage of President Clinton's womanizing, his wife's efforts to save him from the Monica Lewinsky scandal and the prominent role the first lady played during her husband's White House years. Other sources cited by Klein are often anonymous.
The Clinton camp lashed out at the work Monday.
"We don't comment on works of fiction, let alone a book full of blatant and vicious fabrications contrived by someone who writes trash for cash," said Philippe Reines, a spokesman for the senator.
Jim Kennedy, a spokesman for former President Clinton, also called the book "trash."
Will Weisser, Sentinel's associate publisher, said 350,000 copies have been printed.
Such works, according to former Clinton adviser-turned critic Dick Morris, can backfire.
"Personal attacks on Hillary Clinton and her marriage only tend to invigorate her and permit her to characterize all criticism as extreme and personal," wrote Morris in an e-mail exchange with the AP. He added: "These personal shots obscure the more serious questions about her lack of qualifications to be a good president."
To Klein, a former editor of The New York Times Sunday Magazine and author of "The Kennedy Curse," Clinton is a sort of latter-day Richard Nixon, constantly reinventing herself.
"The comparison between Hillary Clinton and Richard Nixon can be pushed only so far," Klein writes, however. "Whereas Nixon sought power in large part to overcome his low self-esteem, Hillary seeks power because she has unrealistically high self-esteem."
But Klein does gives her credit, of a sort, for her work in the Senate.
"To the surprise of many, Hillary turned out to be more than equal to the task of winning friends on both sides of the aisle," he writes, before adding: "No one saw the other side of Hillary Clinton's face, which she kept carefully hidden behind a mask of collegiality."
"If you are a fair-minded, balanced journalist, you have to say Hillary has performed brilliantly in the last five years, and that's what makes her such a formidable politician," Klein told the AP.
The author said he expects Clinton to win easy re-election to the Senate next year, to capture the Democratic nomination for president in 2008 and to have "a real shot at winning red states" in the election.
"I think she would be, in the White House, a Nixonian president and a danger to the republic," Klein said.
The work is being touted by, among others, the Conservative Book Club, which is owned by the parent company of Regnery Publishing. Regnery produced "Unfit for Command," the book that attacked Sen. John Kerry's Vietnam War service and was written by a leader of the anti-Kerry Swift Boat Veterans.
NewsMax.com, a conservative Web site backed by Clinton critic Richard Mellon Scaife, is offering free copies of the Hillary Rodham Clinton book to those who subscribe to its NewsMax Magazine. NewsMax says "publishing insiders say the book and its revelations could destroy her bid for the presidency in 2008."
An excerpt earlier this month in the July issue of Vanity Fair drew criticism from the liberal-leaning Media Matters group, which said Klein's work contained numerous errors.
Readers will learn from the book, thanks to an interview with fifth-grade boyfriend Jim Yrigoyen, that Clinton can be one tough cookie. The old sweetheart recalled how the young Hillary Rodham had entrusted him with watching over some baby rabbits. He made the mistake of giving one to a neighbor.
"She hauled off and punched me in the nose," Yrigoyen said.
As of Monday, the book was ranked No. 18 in sales on Amazon.com.

Libra, the sad thing is Americans actually like trash, imo. Or at least that is what they pay attention to. Personally, I dont think enough credit it given to her as she is quite smart, a lawyer in her own right, and has been kicking around DC and politics forever now! I just hope she has the fortitude to withstand the ride because it doesnt surprise me this is published by the same ones who went after Kerry. As 2008 comes closer they will look to roll her harder and more and make it very personal. The media will play it/cover it too.
Politics is a dirty dirty game. Thats why they say no one worth their character hardly ever even ventures into it.

I think it's going to sell well. And they really can't blame this one on the supposed 'right-winged conspiracy'.....a leftie wrote it.
But it's sure is a 'hot potato'.

Mrs. Clinton told me she would considering suing him for outright libel," the top Hillary source explains. "This is the right wing attack machine on crack!"
But Hillary and her camp may have a hard time typecasting Ed Klein as a Clinton-crazed right-winger. Klein is the former foreign editor of NEWSWEEK and former editor in chief of the NEW YORK TIMES MAGAZINE. He is a frequent contributor to VANITY FAIR and PARADE.
He is also the author of THE KENNEDY CURSE; FAREWELL, JACKIE; and several other NEW YORK TIMES bestsellers.
VANITY FAIR has already commissioned an excerpt of the embargoed Hillary book, exploring Hillary's senate runs.

You have to give her credit for sticking with the bum but will that hurt her chances. Time will tell. I have no problem with Hillary, well I guess I have a little problem with her but with all the males that are going to be running for the democratic Nomination it will take a month of Sundays to decide. I see Biden might put his name in the ring.
I think she is doing good thing for NY and I think she promised the voters if she was elected senator she wouldn't run for president, well we will wait and see. Bill Clinton said the same to the Arkansas voters but he went against his word and ran for president.

rofl libra!! You got that right! And after she went to bat for him on national tv of his innocence? I really dont know how she deals with that, but some say she really does love him that they are partners. Who knows what the real truth is? And yeah, the people of NY seem pleased with her service as senator. At least you havent heard a whole lot of complaining about it.
I would back Biden if he ran. I like him. I watched him on some senate hearing and he came this close to getting really pissed off! He mentioned something about his own kids in the military! He managed to maintain his composure even though his words were very strong but it was obvious to me he meant what he was saying...lol!

Edward Klein is a former Newsweek Editor. I'm quite surprised to hear that the right would give any credence to what he has to say, given the way they all howled , blaming the anti US riots on Newsweek's poorly researched report of Koran abuse... I guess if it suits their fancy, they'll listen to him.
The talk about the book online seems to indicate that it's full of "un-named sources" and the sort of trash talk that scum like Matt Drudge and that fatty blowhard doper Rush Limbaugh love, and precious little about her politics since her husband left the Presidency.
I'll decide after I've read it, but based on what I'm reading about it, it's just more Clintonosis.
The right is terrified of the Clintons. Bill is still the boogey-man...They started their lies about him as soon as he was nominated, and it hasn't stopped yet. They're guaranteed to do the same to Hillary, in spades.

Odd...I don't remember Ed Klein being the one who broke/wrote the Koran issue. Am I mistaken?
And in answer to sources....didn't keep the left from believing them when they use them....which is just about all the time.
But Mr. Klein's answer to that was:
NRO: Are you nervous putting out a product that seems to be based on a lot of anonymous sources?
Klein: Were Woodward and Bernstein?
Look, no reporter likes to use anonymous sources. But most people are afraid of invoking the wrath of Hillary Clinton, and so they will talk about her only on condition of anonymity.
I interviewed nearly 100 people who know Hillary, including classmates from high school, college, and law school; Democratic activists and party officials; White House support staff, speechwriters, and military aides; Cabinet officers, senators and congressmen; and other intimates of the Clintons.
I have had more than 40 years of experience as a serious journalist dealing with sources, both Left and Right, on and off the record. And while writing The Truth About Hillary, I scrupulously checked all my sources for fairness and accuracy.
NRO: You've got good liberal credentials. Is this book the end of that?
Klein: I have never had an ideological ax to grind. I'm a registered independent a reporter who goes where the truth leads me. And I intend to stay that way and let the chips fall where they may.

I don't think he'd set himself up for a lawsuit from hillary. But...hey...we never know.

Libra - to tell you the truth, I think the only people that being married to Bill will hurt her chances with are people who would never vote for her to begin with.
He is still a very popular leader, well respected by our allies with even Bush Sr being complimentary of him. He is a very charismatic man and my opinion is that he would be an aset on the campaign trial and create a big problem for republicans in finding a way to attack him without seeming petty and hypocritical by attacking a candidates spouse out of one side of their mouth and preaching family values on the other.
BTW - Did anyone see Obama and his Mrs on Oprah? Like him, love her. What a spitfire! Smart, strong, charasmatic and a quick wit. They make a hell of a pair. I think the political spotlight will cast a very friendly light on them.

Well deep somewhere in the Clinton Presidency there is some speculation about Hillary. I am not going to devulge my hunches because right now that is what they are. If they are true or semi true it will come out in that book.
Is there another deep throat lurking in those pages? It sure will be interesting. Time will certainly tell. Could there be another Linda Tripp? "Who knows what evil looks in the hearts of men". Does anyone recognize that quote?

This trash will backfire. Even Republicans are distancing themselves from this book. Even they recognize the content which has been excerpted and published as nothing but salacious gossip and such a crude effort to slander that it can only be called very bad fiction. It's not surprising though that you leap to support this garbage, linda.

They've been saying it for years about her and that why she does put up with ole bills wandering.....that they just stay together for the political career...
Although it easily looks that way from all outside appearances, (if you wanted to see it that way), personally I dont think that is the case. But I could be wrong too
...Still its pretty mean to trash her and her family up like that!

Ya, in the rag magazines - the Enquirer, the Globe, etc. What a load of crap. Honestly, does anyone here with any intelligence at all believe what is written in those gossip magazines? Ken and I get a laugh every time we read the covers at the grocery store. IMO, anyone who reads that garbage and believes it has the intelligence of a rock.

Cheryl, I dont believe I heard it from reading those magazines, but rather just people talking or on tv somewhere? Which btw, I will admit to having read an enquirer or globe now and again. Other than this board, they are some of the lightest, goofiest reading you will ever do! lol. And you know what? The expos that may do to Hillary Clinton's presidential ambitions what Unfit for Command did to John Kerry's
Proof she repeatedly lied to the public, and lacks the character to lead the nation
The Truth About Hillary
by Edward Klein
Everyone knows that Bill Clinton wanted to be President of the United States ever since he was a boy. What almost no one knows is that his wife Hillary harbored the same ambition since she was a girl -- and that her plan from the very start of their marriage was to succeed him in the Oval Office. Now, as Hillary gears up to run for President in 2008, distinguished journalist Edward Klein has produced an expos of her darkest secrets that just might do to her presidential ambitions what the Swift Boat Veterans' Unfit for Command did to John Kerry's.
Drawing on rare access to sources close to Hillary Clinton, Klein -- former editor in chief of The New York Times Magazine -- reveals a pattern of chronic bad behavior during her decades-long effort to become America's first woman president, no matter what the cost. He produces secret documents and stunning evidence to show just how much she has been willing to lie, bully, cheat, and manipulate people in her quest for power. He provides shocking new accounts of key moments in Hillary's private and political life - revealing, for instance, what Hillary knew and when she knew it during her years as first lady, especially during her husband's impeachment. He also proves that she lied to America in her bestselling autobiography Living History.
Among the many revelations in The Truth About Hillary:
* How Bill cheated on Hillary from the very start of their relationship at Yale - but she married him anyway, in a "Faustian bargain" that accepted his womanizing as the price of political power
* "Bill owes me": how Hillary allowed Bill to get away with his infidelities to make him fall deeper and deeper into her debt
* Clinton insider: "Hillary never wanted to be a wife. She wanted to be president"
* Hillary confidant confirms: she knew about Monica long before the affair became public
* How Hillary personally stage-managed and coordinated the damage-control effort in response to the Lewinsky scandal
* Juanita Broaddrick: her encounter with Hillary that told her "she knew" Bill had raped her, and that Hillary only wanted Broadrick to keep quiet
* The Hillary White House staffer known as "Mother Superior" charged with keeping women away from Bill -- and Bill away from them
* How Hillary knowingly allowed women to be hired that were regarded as "safe" for Bill to have affairs with
* How Hillary faked being scandalized when the Lewinsky story broke
* How Hillary banished the Secret Service from the White House private residence so they wouldn't witness -- and gossip about -- her and Bill's "Jerry Springer-like free-for-alls"
* How Hillary signed off on all major White House appointments -- including Supreme Court nominees
* White House usher: how Hillary used government funds for her extensive White House redecoration -- while claiming the money came from private donations
* Hillary and Vince Foster: an "open secret" that they were lovers. How he handled her personal affairs and guarded her secrets - and helped clean up the political messes created by Bill
* Hillary's shameful and illegal cover-up of the truth behind Vince Foster's death
* The Machiavellian political operative who has long served as Hillary's "secret consigliere"
* Why Hillary vetoed a settlement with Paula Jones
* How Hillary reacted to losing the presidency of her high-school senior class: a foreshadowing
* Hillary's transformation from Goldwater Republican to hippy radical. The hard-left magazine that influenced her -- she admits to having saved every issue
* The culture of lesbianism at Wellesley College -- and how it strongly influenced Hillary's politics
* The story of Bill and Hillary's meeting in a law library: blatantly untrue
* Hillary's radical views as editor of the Yale Journal of Law and Social Action
* How Hillary acted as a secret partisan agent of Ted Kennedy's during the Nixon impeachment
* How Hillary's flawed Watergate inquiry so muddied the "immoral acts" standard for impeachment that it called into question the ability to impeach -- and was used by the Clintons 25 years later to argue that suborning perjury and obstruction of justice was not enough
* The Little Rock private investigator hired by Hillary to "get rid of all the bitches he's seeing"
* Hillary's pattern of moving to the right -- and then lurching left again when she thinks she's in the clear
* Hillary's ideological roots in "gender feminism," which seeks overthrow of all "patriarchal" dominance, from government to family
* How Bill has gone back to his old womanizing tricks since Hillary's election to the Senate. His torrid affair with a stunning divorcee who lived near the Clintons in Chappaqua
* How Bill tried to talk Hillary into running for President in 2004 -- and why she refused
* Hillary's temporary betrayal of her old leftist allies to build a moderate image for her White House run
* Why Hillary regards Howard Dean's naming as DNC Chairman as a threat to her
* The cynical politicking behind Hillary's hawkishness on the Iraq war
* How Hillary banned wearing military uniforms in the White House -- and then lied about it later on
* How Hillary campaigned for herself under the guise of campaigning for John Kerry in 2004 -- knowing that her future depended on his not winning
* How Hillary made her first moves in the 2008 campaign within days of Kerry's defeat
* The New Hillary: how she's remodeling herself as a "God-fearing, church-going Bible reading Democrat from a Southern state" -- and is also "Botoxed to the hilt," according to a physician who knows
* Why one former Clinton Administration official warns: "Hillary Clinton needs to be kept away from the White House for the rest of her life"
A word to the wise ain't necessary, it's the stupid ones that need the advice."
