ok left myself wide open saying Stupid, but it probably is

I have always gotten the extended daily wear contacts where you get them replaced yearly.

I needed new ones and went to Pearle and had an optometrist exam my eyes for contacts and for glasses. I got a 'trial' pair to wear, and to come back in 7 days, re exam to see if they were good for me. Went back, she checked them, and said 'they are fine' and yeah they were. Gave me a RX for contacts, take them over to the other side of the store, gave them it. And it was for disposables only. I told them I never wore these, and they praised them. Sounds good to me, after 2 weeks, get rid of them, put in new, better for your eyes and all.

Well, they told me 7 days for the new disposables. They would call. After 8 days, I went there, and they hadn't arrived, but for sure the next day, but they would call, I finally went in 5 days later, and they handed me 2 boxes of accuvues.

Here is the stupid part. They are not marked Left or Right, they do have the RX numbers, so I had to get the RX paper out, and I had to ask someone what OS and OD meant (OS is right eye) Well put them in, and they are all messed up, what I think is, she wrote the RX backwards, I don't want to mess with them, but tried them in the opposite eyes than on the RX and they seemed ok, but still don't want to wear them. I know go to Pearle. I will, but wanted to know if anyone else wore these disposable contacts, and did they explain to you how they worked (RX-OD-OS stuff) when you got them?

My mother is probably rolling over in her grave, as she was adament that all 5 of us kids went to Opthamologist, and never to a Optometrist. (I probably would have been better off doing that)

No your not stupid you did what you Dr. told you to do it was his office that screwed up. I think you should go back and ask for your next pair free.

NTS my SIL had them and said they were, in his estimation, not up to standard.

Search the name and see what they saw about them. Pearle probably orders them over the internet and that is how my SIL got them but he threw them away and went back to his Optometrist

NTS call or go back to Pearle and ask for clarification of your RX. which is for the right eye and which is for the left.

If they wrote the RX in reverse, get a new copy of the prescription. You can get contact lenses much cheaper online but you need the prescription.

After they confirm your prescription take your boxes and write R and L on each box and on each individual contact container.

All 4 of we children wear contacts. Three of us went to different optometrists for our prescriptions. We were all prescribed accuvue disposable lenses. I was told to wear mine a month and trash them. One brother was told to wear his a week and trash them and the other brother was told two weeks. They are all the same!

I wear mine a week or two and then put in another pair. I store the old pair in the 4 in 1 solution. I alternate the two pairs every two weeks or so and I wear those two pair approximately 4 to 5 months before having to get out a new pair. The soaking cleans and rehydrates them. When they get mushy and won't hold their shape is when they need to be trashed.

Everyone is different and the length of time they are comfortable wearing disposibles will vary. First thing is to clarify your prescription for the right and left eyes with Pearle.

The bottom line is if they are not giving you the clarity of sight you had with your other contacts go back to the kind you wore before.

Yeah, I didn't even think about how they got them! At 1800contacts, my RX is waaaaaay cheaper. Pearle charged me $125 for the exam and my RX disposables cost $200.You have to pay it all up front, then they order. I didn't bother getting my glasses there. Right now I am wearing old contacts, and old glasses.

I will have to go down there to Pearle, I do deserve an explanation, or at the least, which ones are which! (right or left )

I know it can be harmful to your eyes to wear the wrong prescription, not just contacts, but glasses too.

Near-the-Sea:

OD = RIGHT EYE (Occulus Dexter)

OS = LEFT EYE (Occulus Sinestre)

OU = Both Eyes (Occulus Uterq)

The Latin spelling may be off (lol!)

I also fit CLs for 10 years, so, if ya email me yer RX, I can interpret it for ya

Either me or Ralphie, that is!

"I was a Certified Ophthalmic Medical Technologist for 25 years"

Great! I have a tiny question for you, Tom... how do you get rid of floaters in your eyes or are they there for good?

Well, ye of the age of at least 45??

Infortunately, floaters be there for good.

The back part of the eye is filled with a Jello-like gook called the Vitreous Humor. Makes up the majority of the eye's bulk.

Anyhoo, in that gook is a clear collagen meshwork.

As ye age, the vitreous liquifies & the mesh starts to disintegrate -- the little pieces of the mesh floating around in the liquified vitreous is what ye see as floaters.

HARMLESS, except if you notice a SUDDEN crescendo of floaters accompanied with flashing lights -- see an OPHTHALMOLOGIST ASAP, as ye may be in the midst of a Retinal Detachment...(be particularily aware for this if ye be highly Myopic aka:nearsighted)

Wow, thanks Tom! You answered my question better than anyone else.

P.S. I guess you've figured out by now who we'll all run to when our eyes start to go.

wow, wasn't on, because I'm babysitting the grandkid, and still am

Thanks you guys, chimpchamp, I would probably do what you are doing, I sure do NOT want to pay that amount every 6 months, its ridiculus!~
I'll get lazik before I have to throw them away every other week!

Ok, whilst child is sleeping, I scanned the rx

here

Oh man, hope that doesn't scroll but I have a feeling, sorry in advance.

Ok Tom, tell me (if the scan comes up!) if the right eye is weaker according to this script.

I haven't been able to get to Pearle either because of the kid, but I will, old contacts and glasses are fine for the moment

OH and these are Torics, for astigmatism..
gotta check the kid bbl and THANKS!!!

ok, what I meant was, my right eye needs the stronger lens and always had. Hope that helps, if you can't read it, OD is the first one

Thanks!

Actually, this RX says that yer ASTIGMATISM is slightly greater in your LEFT EYE.

OD=RIGHT EYE
OS=LEFT EYE

READING ACROSS:

FIRST NUMBER = MYOPIA AMOUNT (if there were a "+" sign in front of that FIRST number, then it would be HYPEROPIA ("far-sightedness)-- you are essentially equally MYOPIC ("nearsighted) in both eyes...

SECOND NUMBER = ASTIGMATISM AMOUNT -- as you can see, it is 1/2 diopter greater L>R, which is a slight difference.

THIRD NUMBER = THE AXIS -- this is complicated & has to do with the position of the astigmatic (toric) lens...basically means that you cannot switch lenses (IOW: you must wear Right on RIGHT EYE & left on LEFT EYE

FOURTH & FIFTH NUMBER = BASE CURVE (back curve) & DIAMETER of your CL's -- which, with SOFT CLs is really determined by the BRAND & MODEL of soft TORIC (astigmatic) CL.

NOTE: the above explanations are very GENERAL & for easy understanding -- the numbers can be explained in rather complicated, but more accurate, mathematical explanation...

BTW: in case yer interested, you have:

Compound Myopic Astigmatism in both eyes...

Also, if yer interested, for a slight fee, Ralphie performs lasix with his tongue...

Tom, you know what, I beleive you've explained it better here than any optometrist I've seen in years!!

Ok, so your saying the astigmatism is more (slightly) in the left. Thats the problem (I think!) I believe she meant to write the OS as OD, and visa versa, can that happen, or do you understand what I am saying. I know you said that I can't switch, but when I first tried them, both in the eyes according to the script, it was awful, so I thought, ok, and switched them, and I could see with them that way??

I think my opt. needs to do some splainin, and I will not pay for different contacts, I honestly don't know what I'll do, probably head for an opthamologist.

They are open on Saturdays, and I'll be down there alright!

Oh, my brother said his wife wears these accuvue disposables, and they opened up each box and with a black felt pen wrote L and R on each blister pack of contacts for her. At Pearle they handed the bag to me, and didn't say a thing. And I didn't know what they would be like, as I have never wore disposables, so I didn't ask at the time.

thanks Tom, and tell Ralphie, ah, um, I'll pass on his lazik LOL

Yer asking: "Do Dr's mix up their R & L's?"

The answer: "Yes"

My experience working in Ophthalmology from 1972 - 2000: I've seen all kinds of truly BIZARRO mistakes with scripts!

There is enough DIFFERENCE between your eyes, that if you switch lenses (IOW: wear wrong lens on wrong eye), things will probably NOT be clear.

I would just go back and ASK -- any good DOC will try to sort it out.

BTW: if it makes ya feel any better, it is IMPOSSIBLE to "hurt" yer peepers by wearing an incorrect lens power (unless yer younger than about 6)

NOTE: lens "fit" is a different jar of jellies...

So drs can make some mistakes glad to know that, I thought I was losin it, or my eyes went totally bad overnight! LOL!!! (I mean they are bad enough now! )

And it is good to know that it wouldn't hurt to try the 'wrong' lens!

Thanks again, and now everyone will be askin you eye questions!

N-T-S:

Something else to keep in mind: a certain small percentage of SOFT CL's are just plain mis-labled/mis-manufactured... whatever!

Especially with disposables, where COST is such an important factor, I would be more inclined in your case to expect a PRODUCT ERROR as opposed to a PRACTITIONER ERROR
