DAMNIT! I've been working on this box on and off for the better part of a week. Cut the wood, formed everything, covered the base and set it aside while I have been working on the top. FInally got the top finished and at 7 o'clock UPS finally showed up with the package that contains the hardware and I can't find the base. I've looked everywhere. 15 feet of shelving has now been completely reorganized as I took everything off each shelf one by one, closets gone thru, trash cans in rooms I have not been in in days....nothing! Argggghhh!

Best way to find the first base is to complete a second base.

I've lost it and after reading your initial post, it reminded me of a bumpersticker i once saw that said;
I may have lost my virginity but i still have the box it came in. LOL
So Fenix, are you a woodworker, do you have a shop or shop tools to do woodworking projects.

PI - nope - I'm playing. I'm a habitual tinkerer. I see something cool, get an idea and have to play around and see if I can do it. Since my friends are renovating this building I just used their tools. Gotta admit though... powertools are kinda fun... I may have to get me some.

Being a habitual tinkerer you should have your own shop to do all the neat ideas that come to your mind. I used to have a wood shop of my own and i really miss it because i used to do the same thing, as you say i'd see something cool get an idea and then go about creating it. I once came across 4 guitar tuning doohickies in a storage sale i bought and i got the idea to build my own guitar. 2 months later i had my guitar. I built all sorts of cool stuff like furniture, wood and glass showcases, thumb piano's, etc. One day i was looking at the tines on a rake and i noticed how springy the metal was and i can't explain it but in my mind i could see just how to use the tines to make the keys on a thumb piano. before i knew it i was cranking out thumb piano's left and right and everyone that i knew wanted one, $20 bucks apiece.

A thumb piano is a generic term for an African musical instrument more widely known as a Mbuti, Mbira or Kalimba.
Here's a link that explains it better and shows some pics of what they look like. The ones that i built were similar to these but i think mine were/are better.

Interesting! I can't imagine trying to make that. I'd love to have a shop area where I can create at will. I was thinking that when I move I'm going to try to find a small wherehouse space the would be hard to destroy. I just keep thinking back on some friends apartment in my old building in LA. They got into candlemaking for fun, then were pretty successful and ended up doing it as a living... when they moved the entire apartment had to be gutted, everything was covered in wax. I want a space where I can do whatever project it is I decide to try without worrying how much damage I am going to do to the surroundings.

Thanks for posting that link, piinthesky.
I've never see one in my life nor even heard about them.
On the one you built did you also use the bottle caps like is done in the pictures? Pretty good figuring out the rake tongs would work.

I just used the rake tines but i used 8 of them so i could tune it to the pentonic (sp) scale, do re mi fa so la te do. I wanted to make an electric one using electric guitar pickups but i never got around to it. The ones that i made have a deep resonance type sound and i think it would be great electrified.

What is chapter 49 piinthesky? Is that the book she's writing or the one she's currently engorging herself on?

She mentioned something about being on chapter 47 in a thread a while back when it was late and time for her bedtime. I just figured that she had to be on chapter 49 by now but it was not meant insultively as if she couldn't read faster or anything like that, i just had something i wanted to ask her.
(Just so's you don't get the wrong idea maggie when you do read this)

Maggie, it was late when i posted that and now i can't remember what it was that i wanted to ask you.
But guess what, I just found out today that a friend wants to give me a table saw. I don't even have a place to keep it but the good thing is that i can use the saw to build a place to keep it or at least a good sturdy and watertight box to keep it in.
