Hitting a Police Officer 'No Big Deal?' Republicans Ask

By Susan Jones
CNSNews.com Senior Editor
March 31, 2006

(CNSNews.com) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says she "wouldn't make a big deal" out of Rep. Cynthia McKinney's alleged assault on a Capitol Hill police officer.

Pelosi on Thursday called the incident a "mistake" -- due to the "unfortunate lack of recognition of a Member of Congress."

Rep. McKinney, a Georgia Democrat, allegedly struck a Capitol Police officer in the chest Wednesday afternoon, when he asked her to go through a metal detector in a House office building.

Although members of Congress are not required to go through metal detectors, the officer apparently did not recognize McKinney, who admitted she was not wearing a pin that identifies her as a member of Congress. She reportedly struck him when he put his hand on her shoulder to guide her back to the metal detector.

A group that works to elect Republicans to the House called it "highly regrettable" that House minority leader Pelosi would "dismiss an assault on a member of the law enforcement community as not worthy of further scrutiny.

"The Minority Leader's remarks today demonstrate a clear lack of respect for the millions of Americans who help keep our communities safe and our borders secure," said the Republican National Congressional Committee.

The NRCC also noted that McKinney, in a statement on her website, never apologized for hitting the police officer.

She simply said she "appreciates" the work the police do and "deeply regrets" that the incident took place. She said she continues to "support" the police.

Fox News Channel reported that McKinney, accompanied by her attorney, will hold a press conference Friday morning.

Capitol Police reportedly are investigating the incident, but press reports said surveillance tape supposedly showing McKinney hitting the officer will not be released.

It's not as if she nailed the guy with a vicious left hook.

Sounds like she "hit" the guy with a backhand push as many women have done in "hands off / don't touch" move.

That's a move that happens in bars across the country every night and not one of those women is ever charged with assault so lets dial down the retoric just a tad.

If attacking Pelosi for saying what any non politically motivated person with common sense would say is the best that Republicans can come up with... they are in trouble.

Fenix, doesnt matter, place your hands on a cop on duty and that's assault. She didnt display the proper ID allowing her to bypass the metal detector. He was doing his job and she felt too important to be bothered plus she was probably pizzed off that she wasnt recognized.

If I walked by the same guy every day for a couple years and I might be a bit pissed if he didn't recognise me too. Especially since that is part of their job to know who it is they are protecting. There was no need for him to touch her. Sorry but I just don't see where this is a big deal. And I think that had it been a republican, you wouldn't think so either.

Personally, I think it's ridiculous and anyone trying to make it into an issue should be embarassed. Don't our leaders have better things to do than to spend time and energy on something this petty?

So fenix you think it is a waste of time for the police officer to do his job?

She was wrong and at the very least needs to apologize. But of course I also heard she is pulling the race card as the reason the white officer didn't recognize her.

If anything, I implied that he was lousy at his job.

Fenix, he was new on the job, was he to memorize the faces of all the congressmen prior to reporting to work?

Doc - there is film but the capital police will not release it. It's also coming out that the officer did not "put his hand on her shoulder to guide her back to the metal detector" but rather chased her down and grabbed her.

Ask any woman you know what she is going to do if someone grabs their arm from behind. They are going to swing their arm out and hit the person. It's instinct.

The officer needs to grow up. But of course, making a big deal of it and claiming assault is a good way to deflect attention away from the fact that he was not able to recognise a six term congresswoman that passes him everyday.

Bear - if he has not been on the job long enough to know who it is he is supposed to be protecting, then he should not have been on the door.

This is stupid. I cannot believe this is an issue. This is the pettiest thing I have heard in a long time.

Now she's going to make a race issue of it.

McKinney Faces Arrest for Scuffle

Georgia Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney delayed a scheduled news conference Friday morning as U.S. Capitol police reportedly made plans to seek an arrest warrant against her for striking a police officer.

McKinney's office says the news conference is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. They say that actor Danny Glover will also be present at the news conference to be held on Howard University's campus in northwest Washington. 11Alive.com will carry the news conference live.

McKinney, a Democrat, represents Atlanta suburbs that make up one of Georgia's two black-majority districts. She planned to hold a news conference with her lawyer on Friday at 11 a.m., but an aide in her office said a new time and date for the news conference were being arranged.

The six-term congresswoman is said to have hit a Capitol Police officer in the chest earlier this week when he stopped her from entering the building without going through a metal detector. McKinney said she was not wearing a lapel pin identifying her as a House member, but that she did display her Congressional identification badge.

The charges, if they are filed against her, could include felony assault on a police officer or simple assault, which is a misdemeanor. Before police can make an arrest, the U.S. Attorney's office has to approve the warrant and then notify the U.S. Justice Department because the warrant involves a sitting member of Congress.

U.S. Capitol Police said there is surveillance video of the confrontation between the officer and McKinney, but they say the video will not be released. McKinney released a statement saying she deeply regrets the incident, but was rushing to a meeting when the officer failed to recognize her. "Unfortunately, the Police Officer did not recognize me as a Member of Congress and a confrontation ensued," the statement read.

McKinney said that government security officers often fail to recognize her and treat her like a criminal suspect. Her staff members are defending her by distributing a clip of her from the new film “American Blackout.” As McKinney shows the filmmaker around the capitol grounds, a security officer fails to recognize her at first and stops her.

“That’s just typical of the type of treatment I receive. It’s typical. So, I’m not surprised and I’m not offended,” McKinney said in the film. “Okay. Thank you. Some things never change."

The incident has become the topic of much-heated debate on talk radio and for Democrats and Republicans on the Hill. Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi on Thursday labeled it "a mistake, an unfortunate lack of recognition of a member of Congress." She added that the police officer was not at fault. "I would not make a big deal of this," said Pelosi, D-Calif.

Ron Bonjean, spokesman for House Speaker Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., responded: "How many officers would have to be punched before it becomes a big deal?"

They both screwed up Bear. She should have worn her pin, he should have known who she was. It should have been a non issue.

I'm not saying that if he was new and did not know the cast of charachters that he should not have tried to stop her. But if you grab a woman be the arm from behind that does not have any reason to expect that she is going to be grabbed, she is going to hit you. That is instinct. It should have ended there. The reason I think it's ridiculous is that this guy is trying to press assault charges against her for doing what any woman would do. It's petty and it's allowing a bruised ego to override common sense. (BTW - I think her now trying to turn it into a racial issue is petty too)

"Fenix, doesnt matter, place your hands on a cop on duty and that's assault."

Hmmm. Contradictions...

We had a problem recently in front of our store where someone shoved me. The dispute came when the person purposely backed into my vehicle. One of our business neighbors called the cops and there were three different witnesses who saw the person shove me, though I did nothing other than voice my concern over my car being hit.

What did the cop say??? "Shoving someone isn't assault." So, I asked him, "Are you are telling me that if I shoved you, it wouldn't be assault?" His response... "I wouldn't advise that." Typical Cop BS... Not wanting to do their job, not wanting to file a report. Ironically, when he left he turned into Starbucks for his late afternoon snack.

I have a hunch that there is a little more to this McKinney story than what any of us know. But leave it to Bear... frothing at the mouth at anything he can reach for.

Anytime anyone places a hand on a cop in performance of his duties one is subject to arrest for assault.

No Ron. It's not BS. It's reality. It's a defense instinct. I've done it myself. Had my headphones on and didn't hear a friend calling my name. He ame up behind me and grabbed arm. I nailed him with my forearm in the stomach (he's a tall friend). It may not be a guys gut response, but it will the one of most women. Other will jerk their arm up, then turn.

LOL....did anyone else see HER press conference...that SHE called to talk about this?

She steps up to the mike and only says since she's had charges pressed against her and on the advice of her attorney...she can't speak about it.

ROFLOL...here this whole group of blacks are all there too....including school children from her district to support her FOR PUNCHING A police officer/security guard.

A day or so ago Fox News also reported this WAS NOT the FIRST time she's struck a 'person of authority' either. Can't remember if they said this incident made the 4th or 5th times she's done so.

She calls a press conference.....

She refuses to wear her ID pin...

She has a previously history of hitting people...

BUT it's the republican's that are trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill.....according to the liberals.

She needs anger management classes AND time management classes....and be held accountable for her OWN agressive behavior....not have Pelosi continuing to enable this poor behavior on McKinney's part.

AND she needs to know just because she's a black women...doesn't give her 'special' rights to hit ANYONE...let alone a security guard in the Capitol. lol

BUT as usual...blame the victim...not the aggressor.
