I hope their OK, not injured or dead.

With that said, WHY does my tax money have to be spent to go looking for their stupid rears?

They are GROWN MEN, who VOLUNTARILY decided in the WINTER to go MOUNTAIN CLIMBING, with full knowledge that horrendous winter weather was not only possible, BUT HIGHLY LIKELY.

WHY should tax dollars be spent to go find them? WHY shouldn't people who pull that kind of insanity, including parachute jumping, speedboat racing, motorcycle racing, car racing, snake handlers, people who drive their automobiles across so called frozen lakes, etc, etc, etc FOR RECREATION AND ENTERTAINMENT BE REQUIRED to purchase sufficient INSURANCE to cover ALL EXPENSES should some unfortunate event occur?

Yup, they SHOULD and here in Minnesota I think they do have to pay for their own rescue. Like the brain dead snomobilers who just HAVE to see who can be the first to sink their sled in the nearest "frozen" lake.

An interesting analysis from Metafilter. I believe however that rescue efforts should not be dependent on monetary payment or insurance.

Tier One:

Driving down the road and getting stuck in a blizzard,
Being mugged
Having a wire short out and cause a fire
-- "Rescue the people. Bad luck shouldn't be a death sentence, if anyone can help. That's why it is our instinct to live in groups. That's what society evolved to do."

Tier Two:

Skiing at a ski area, going out of control and hitting a tree
Getting raped while buying crack
Falling asleep with a cigarette in your hand and causing a fire
-- "Rescue the people. We don't want stupidity to be a death sentence. Out of our instinct to live in groups grows the instinct to protect the less able members of the group. It lessens us as human beings if we are selfish, and whether we admit it or not, we feel bad. Besides, you may not be stupid now, but as you get old you will be. Now you look after yourself, but when you need it we as a society will take care of you, just as we did when you were a child."

Tier Three:

Climbing Mt. Hood in the winter and getting lost
Going to a country your country forbids you to go to, and then needing your government to rescue you from the danger they warned you about
Committing a serious crime in another country, and finding the punishment harsh.
-- "Screw them. If you need to blaze your own trail and pursue your snowflake destiny, rock on. Be happy. But whatever the consequences are, suck it up. Why would you deliberately endanger your life, knowing that you are compelling other people to risk their lives -- even give their lives -- to save you? Because you are a selfish ass, and if you can't take care of yourself, that should be a death sentence."
