I'm getting a new computer and it has windows me installed. Does anyone know anything about Windows me? Also it's a gateway computer and I was wondering if anyone owns one and if they like it or not.

If you already have a printer, scanner, digital camera, or something similar, you should do some research and make sure they will work under ME. You may need to get updated drivers from the manufacturer for some printers etc.
I ordered my Solo laptop with 98se because I had heard lots of compatibility problems with ME and hardware. The only way to have 98se as an option is to use the Professional line from Gateway.
We'll be ordering a new desktop system after the first of the year, and will stay with 98se on that one as well. I've seen ME on my sister in laws new Dell. It just looked more dumped down to me.

WindowsME on my laptop caused severe compatibility problems in accessing various websites. Also caused my browser to constantly shut down because it had not yet been updated to coordinate with WindowsME. Wish I could convince the person who put it on my laptop to take it off.

Reading current Windows newsgroups would seem to disagree with Pocono's opinion. We read up on it and all we read gave it a big thumbs down. PC Mag advised waiting for the first service patch for ME.
I have a Gateway. I bought it back in March. The couple of times that I had to call customer support, I found that one will tell you one thing, and another tells you something else. I have not had anything major go wrong with it, and I do like the computer, just not happy with customer service.
It came with windows 98se, and I upgraded to WindowsME. I found no problems with my scanner or printer after I upgraded. I would not go back to windows 98se...

Meya: I respectfully disagree with you, and speak only from the 15 years experience, and 10,000+ computer systems that I have built and installed operating systems on.
I am not saying that Windows ME is flawless, far from it.
I WILL say, that as a beta tester, I have been been using MS ME for over a year, and have seen many, many problems with it up to the final release on February 17th 2000.
There are patches and fixes available for any known bugs, that are easily downloaded from the Windows ME Update page.
What I AM saying, is that I have had many, many complaints and problems with MS 98SE, and relatively few with MS ME.
In all fairness, my systems are built to comply with Windows ME, and other companies do not always take the steps that we do to ensure that.
I am speaking strickly for desktop systems here also, as I have no knowledge of how it performs in laptop systems.
If you should have any problems with running ME, I would be glad to try and help you solve those problems.

I did find one major fault with ME.. you can not network a system that has ME and a system that has NT (whereas you can easily network 95/98 w/ NT). This might change with future updates of ME.. or it might be corrected in Win2000.. but as it stands, it's a no go with NT4

Thanks everyone. I have an HP now and while I could always get tech support and they were nice it was like Chevy described for the Gateway one answer from one and a different answer from another. I think it's pretty much the same with any company as far as that goes. The only thing that won't be compatable is my scanner and I think I can download a new driver for that. I was looking for a better printer and ended up with ordering a whole new system. I did get a top of the line Lexmark which is compatable with windows me. I remember people not wanting to switch from win 95 to 98, so I guess something new is always scary.
I might just be taking you up on the offer to help Pocono. I appreciate it. I'll just consider this a new adventure. The HP was my first computer and I"ve had a lot of fun with it but I'm ready for more.
