About a month ago, I purchased a designer sweater for less than half price at a very upscale shop. I wore it once and decided that it just wasn't "me" so I put it up for auction. I sent the sweater to be drycleaned and left the drycleaners tag attached so whoever won it would know that it had been cleaned. Yesterday, I received feedback from the winning bidder stating that it needed cleaning because it smelled so bad! I immediately emailed the bidder and offered a full refund, including return shipping. She responded by saying that the sweater smelled of cigarettes and perfume, obviously used to to cover up the tobacco smell. This is a non-smoking household, we have no pets and I only use perfume on special occasions. She refused a refund and said that the sweater was in the washing machine "now" to try to get rid of the smell. By the way, the sweater was a blend of wool and cashmere and is clearly marked "Dry Clean Only". I dread thinking about what it will look like after it comes out of her machine.

The point of this post??? Assuming that there is something in my household that is causing an odor and I can't smell it...What can be done to be SURE that fabric is not carrying offensive odors?

By the way, I paid $110.00 for the sweater (on sale) and the bidder got it for $9.50!

Your buyer sounds like she is just have a moan for the sake of it. You have done the right thing by offering her a refund, she refused end of story.

One thought comes into my mind about the smell. Sometimes when you have carpet cleaned and then lock the house up and come back to it there is a bad musty smell. I was thinking that even though you had the item dry cleaned, it could be from being packed up and sent that caused the smell. Just a thought I may be way off base with this idea.

Now don't take this as totally correct either, but I have been told that 'kitty litter' removes smells such as tobacco and smoke from items. I was told to put the item in a bag with the said 'kitty litter' and leave it for a few hours and hey presto the smell is gone. I have not tried this myself but have been assured that it works.

If you don't smoke and weren't around smokers, it didn't smell like smoke. Some people complain for the sake of complaining. I hope she has a small dog because that's the only thing that sweater will fit after she washes it.

Edited to add- Her next complaint will be "it shrunk in the wash"

There is a segment of the buyer populace that uses that ploy to obtain full or partial refunds. It's almost always women, of course; what else would be so chicken bleep?

Hard to imagine one so petty as to pull that for ten bucks, but that's women, eh?

Is her name Petty, err, Patti?

krs, you imp.

I hate women bidders. They're so slow and think everything can be had for pennies.

I imagine them squirming in front of their cheap monitors for days before finally making a bid, and then proudly proclaiming: "There! I did it! I bid my Twenty Five Cents!" Then close up their tawdry little change purses and go to watch soaps.

Hi Femme

NETTAK

Thanks for the kitty litter suggestion. I use it to soak up oil dribbled on my driveway so I usually have a bag available.

KRS

Thank you for sharing your insight about women. Having been one for more years than I care to admit, that has not been my experience.

ANYONE: Your thoughts on using Fabreeze or some other "neutrilizer"?

My husband only wishes I were staring at a "cheap" monitor. Spending money has never been my problem.

And femme you are so right.

I use Nil Odour on my carpets and curtains but have never tried it on clothes, the same with fabreeze.

Maybe krs should stand in our shoes for a day or two and see how tight ask the men are, and for the record more men seem to know what is going on with the soaps and kids shows than the women.

KRS likes to toss out provocative statements to see what sort of mini-tempest he can start. I did expect a higher level of subtlety from him, though. I do hope this doesn't indicate a falling lack of interest or ability on his part.

shadowcat we took no real offence at krs so no mini tempest around here.

I have been reading his post for a lot longer than I have been posting and I do believe he is mellowing in his old age.

I had a similar experience with a book...the first edition of The
Annotated Alice (Alice in Wonderland).

It smelled like smoke even though we don't smoke.
I told the buyer to send it back and I would refund her money and
cost of return postage.

She answered that the book was for her HUSBAND and that she could
not pry the book away from him!

Sometimes you just can't win.

Is it just me...or does that cute little pooch have sad eyes?

And, will Antiquary take my observation as bait and run with it?

Edited to add: Sorry, msmas, for derailing your thread. We'll go to our corners now.

For those that want to know (or even care), you can wash cashmere (or wool or mohair or angora) right in the washing machine. I do. The trick is to use Woolite, cold wash, cold rinse and the gentle wash, gentle rinse cycles. Just don't put them in the dryer! It is my understanding that when you have items "dry cleaned" they are still putting your items in a water/chemical solution so the process is not technically "dry".

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled programming now...

Maybe I had better get myself a US dictionary, because the Australian one I have says "offense" is spelt OFFENCE.

Just goes to show none of us is perfect.

krs I love the picture

Nettak,

Isn't he adorable!

In the US, we are off the hook as far as
spelling...we can spell it either way.
I think that offense is the most popular
here.

I'm reading a book about Australia...
Fatal Shore. It's really great.
