I want to purchase an internal CD burner. There are tons of brands with a large price range. Can anyone recommend a particular model? Or maybe a website that compares them? I looked at one here in town Yamaha 16x10x40 for $200. Any advise would be appreciated.
Thanks

I have the VeloCD by TDK. It's *fast,* puts out the new 80min/700mb CDs, and so far hasn't produced even one "coaster." It also has gotten some of the highest ratings of any burner. It was a bit pricey--$249 at Best Buy, but worth it IMO. The software it somes with is great, too, I am told by folks who know these things. Unfortunately, technopeasant that I am, I found it confusing. Sooo...I spent a little more & added in Roxio's (used to be Adaptec) Easy CD Creator, and haven't looked back. Only two problems now: 1. the rise & fall of the cost of blank CDRs has become a burning issue with me & I constantly scan ads for rebates, sales, etc., and 2. I am totally addicted to Napster. I spend hours downloading stuff. Things I have looked for in vain for years. And one thing seems to lead to another, so there is no end in sight. The other night I was simply overjoyed-- I found *two* renderings of "Barney Google" shortly after downloading a 1918 recording of Caruso singing "Over There," not to mention discovering a song from the 20s I'd never heard--"Don't Bring Lulu" (4 versions)!!! Can life get any better?

edited because "ad" and "add" are simply not the same thing

Here is PC World's latest review of burners:

http://www.pcworld.com/reviews/article/0,aid,39228,pg,3,00.asp

That should give you some info to start with. I think ours is a Philips 4X4X24, it came from Gateway. It's a year and half old, so not as fast as the new ones. We've not had any problems with it, and we use it along with Easy CD Creator 3.5c It actually gets a lot of use, especially lately.

We recently purchased a Creative CDRW 8-4-32X from Circuit City. In making our decision we were told by the salesperson that the burners usually last for about 2000 burns. So we purchased the warranty for an additional 40.00 that will cover it for 4 years, if it goes bad all we have to do is return it and they will give us a new one. We are very happy with it so far.

The OfficeMAX store where I live just had an ad in the paper- 200 CD-Rs for $45, with a $45 rebate.
