Hi Muriel,
Happy SPRING to you too -- or I guess happy spring -- delighted to be able to work outside but here we sort of jumped from winter to summer for a few weeks so trying to get everything done has become a little more than a full time job. But I do love this time of year.

Antiquary: We had a beautiful day Friday, a beautiful Saturday, and it's raining today. Is this where I say "piffle"??

Yes, it rained heavily here last night, also, Muriel. I have to wait until it dries out to dig in again.

Muriel,
You have a happy day too! If it's raining,
you can plant some indoor plants.
Or, play with your gifs.

Helen, you noticed! I got my computer upgraded, and now the gifs are much easier. I was gif-challenged for awhile. Here's a special one for you!

ANTIQUARY!!!
Happy rabbit day to you, also.
It was a glorious day here yesterday.
We were very productive in the yard and I have a sunburned neck to prove it.
Unfortunately, the nesting bunnies weren't too happy with us.
Poor KRS...must be suffering from hay fever.

Hi FEMME,
Sounds like you're having a good weekend. I've escaped sunburns, except very light ones, so far. Moved and extended the strawberry bed and just finished the plantings before the rain hit. Next, the tomatoes, which is definitely a sacred summer ritual for me. Then numerous small landscaping projects. But by August I'll be sick of it all and ready for fall.

Hi Antiquary!...
Happy Rabbit Day to you, too! Are you going to wish us a happy Santa Day at Christmas?
For me, it's happy Done With Taxes Day. I thought this moment would never come... It's a fine day indeed...

I have blantantly stolen this post from Pareau on another board---but it looks like it was a cut and paste job to begin with
----------------------------------------
"The following views, advanced by Jacob Grimm in his Deutsche Mythologie (1835), are generally held by Germanic scholars:
April, in Anglo Saxon, Old High German, and some modern German dialects, is called Ostara's month.' All cultures living in temperate (or winter dominated) climates celebrate the coming of spring with major
rituals and festivals. One of the most important of spring festivals among pre-Christian Germanic tribes apparently was dedicated to the goddess Ostara, whose name suggests 'east' and thus 'dawn' and 'morning light.' The name of Ostara's (Eostra's) festival was transferred to the celebration of Christ's resurrection when Anglo-Saxon and German heathens converted to Christianity.
Thus, unlike other European cultures, English and German Christians still attach the name of a heathen goddess to their most sacred holiday: Easter or Ostern. In other European languages the holiday's name is based on the Hebrew word 'pasah,' to pass over, thus reflecting the Christian holiday's Biblical connection with the Jewish
Passover.
In addition to the name, other popular Easter customs also have heathen origins:
- The belief in the curative properties of water drawn early on Easter morning. These beliefs were common in Germany into the nineteenth century.- The veneration (if now only playful) of rabbits and hares.
- The decoration of eggs (obvious fertility symbols).
Place names suggest that Ostara was venerated throughout ancient Germany and Denmark.
Although neither the Prose Edda nor the Poetic Edda mentions Ostara, both works refer to a male dwarf named Austri, whose name also means 'east.'"

Thank you, Antiquary.
I just put in Rutgers and Beefsteak tomatoes, but I don't know how they'll do since I'm new to this area. I already have dandelions, lol.

Hey TOKE,
Yup, I'll do Santa Day. I'm a non-discriminatory, non-prosyletizing holiday greeter.
Tax Day is never a day of celebration.
You planning any gardening this year?

Hi Julesy and snowy!
Snowy, another tomato lover!
Arkansas Traveller is a really good vintage tomato if you ever come across some plants. They've been available here the last couple of years.
I've always wanted to try a variety called Radiator Charlie's Mortgage Lifter Tomatoes since I read about them and I've seen them for sale in some seed catalogs. Too lazy to do the seeds though. Maybe some day before wife retires and we move.

One of the favorite lunches here is a fresh tomato sandwich on homemade bread. I'll look for those now that the weather's tolerable.

I love tomato sandwiches, with butter and lettuce also. Any home grown tomato is good, but you might try a couple of the Arkansas Travellers if they're available.

Yes...I want some GOOD tomatoes! I dunno if the soil will dry out enough for planting in my lifetime, however. You wouldn't believe how soggy it is.
The lake rose high enough a couple of weeks ago to lap over and erode some of our next door neighbors frontage. Never seen that before, in 25 years.... Thank goodness we're on a little higher ground.

Yes, the weather was like that here a couple of summers ago, rained on average 3 times a week from March through the first of July. Never seen anything like it. Weathermen blamed it on El Nino, but I suspect it's more than that. Then last summer from July through September we had the longest dry period since the Dust Bowl days. Maybe global warming. Hope it dries out there.

Hi Antiquary! Happy Rabbit day to you too! It has been happy buttercup day here as I made war on them all afternoon! Tomatoes here are still in their little seedling stage. Can't put any out until at least the end of next month. It has been exceptionaly dry around here and we are in drought conditions so I am hoping we get rain at least once a week all summer or there will be no garden here.
I had a wonderful day! I hope you all did too.

Hi, Rawbunzel. I've been sparing with the dandelions. Those things multiply faster than rabbits.
Sorry to hear about the drought there. Sounds like weather almost everywhere has been pretty crazy the last few years. So far almost ideal here (fingers crossed). I hope you start getting rain; I remember the great pictures you shared with us last year.
