I took a look at carnaby and, like most others, I like the site.
I know everyone is looking/hoping for an alternative to ebay. Why should anyone support carnaby or the other "Free-For-Now sites over yahoo?
After all, yahoo is already established and has the financial backing to compete with ebay.
I know yahoo has some problems and they charge but, so will carnaby if/when they get that big.
So shouldn't we all be supporting yahoo over carnaby?

Yahoo is the best all around site.. what they have to do is offer the seller at Least 1 Free relist! If ya gonna charge a listing fee then ya must give the seller at least 1 free relist. They have the easiet Free Image Hosting.. 3 images hosted Free!
Is a class site and I expect them to start surging forward by Septembet 2001
Basically No down time, a clean clear site that Does listen to users and acts prrretty fast on requests also.
Nothing but good vibes for me from them and they do not try and alienate the good smart auction seller In other words it is not a High School being run by a teacher who does not know how to teach.
Any site that I ask for something to be added or corrected, and all they do is yes yes me to death is Not a site I wanna be listing on. Some have it, most do not.
Yahoo, has it.

I see no reason to choose one over the other, I sell on both, and to date I've been very pleased with the results on each site.
Of course, I also "sell" on Amazon, ebaY, and I have "listings" on BV.

While I personally don't use Yahoo! (have my own reasons) I agree with Rob--why not use both sites? I don't want to see any of the sites 'versus' each other, so to speak. Each has their own weak points and strong points and each could learn from the others.

I think most sellers are too busy to list on many different sites.
Besides, if you wanted to help create an alternative to ebay and convince others to do the same you wouldn't want to dilute that support by listing on 1/2 dozen other sites.
So if a seller was looking to leave ebay to throw his or her support to ONE site hoping that site would in turn give ebay some competition.

All i can say about Yahoo is go to your favorite category that you sell in, click on bids and it will show you exactly how many successful auctions there are. My category of prints is pretty pathetic, maybe less than 100 selling auctions at any given time for about 6 to 8 thousands prints up for auction? I am very ready to give a "new guy" a chance. Yahoo had it's day and they basically walked away from something good.

Excellent questions Wedgewood
Unfortunately it makes it harder to decide as each site has it's plus and minus.
For me personally it would depend on whether or not carnaby has an advertising campaign.
They say they plan on charging fees, and I respect that honesty. In return are they going to promote the site or just expect sellers to do it for them?
Atleast yahoo brings in buyers through their portal, and does some promoting, not as much as they can or should.
To me it's important that a site atleast shows it's sellers that it's serious about promoting it's site.

I appreciate all the positive comments that have been posted on this board, and unfortunately, haven't had much time to post many responses, since we have been busy preparing our marketing campaign.
I also don't want to "defend" our company or "put down" any of the existing companies out there today. Our goal was, and still is, to create the Ultimate Online Marketplace, where people can buy or sell almost anything on earth. Our dream was to facilitate trading among the "average citizen" of the world, and bring them products they never thought they would be able to purchase in their country or town. The online auction business model seemed to be the most effective in providing this venue, and we gladly took on the challenge.
It seems that there are a lot of people who want to compare one site with another, or put one up against the other one, but that is not, and never will be our intention. Just like Ford has its GM and Wal-Mart has its K-Mart, we plan to co-exist with other venues out there, and let the public decide our merits or faults on their own.
Carnaby is, and always will be, about people, and about giving them the choice to do whatever suits them the best.
We wish everyone the best of luck running their small businesses, no matter what venue they choose, since this is truly what "free enterprise" means.
But that's just my honest opinion. Thank you for your time.

Carnaby
I hope you didn't take it as an offense that I would compare carbaby to yahoo.
This was meant to be a constructive discussion for those of us who would like to see ebay get some REAL competition.
The title was meant to grab attention to the thread.
The reason I chose carnaby instead of the other auctions is, as of yet non of them to the best of my knowledge has done any real promotion. Other than bargan and haggle which I don't consider an auction.
I think sellers want to know if A company is going to promote it's auction to help bring in buyers.
