I was looking for a download at a popular site I've visited many times in the past when I was suddenly assaulted by a multitude of porn pop-ups. Each time I finally closed all the windows and tried to return to my original task I'd get the same 10 or so windows again. It was some kind of porn vortex! I closed my browser thinking I'd start over fresh when the next thing I know the porn site had made itself my home page!
Come to find out there are programs that can actually write to your registry without your permission. I started running an application called Lavasoft Ad-aware 5.5 which seeks out these intruders and wipes them from your system.
I have no problem with pop-up ads. I think they're a great way to generate income. But programs such as doubleclick, or gator that sit on your system I can live without, and I certainly don't want my home page set anywhere except where I set it.
I'm no techie. Just my experience. I'd like to add that never once did it enter my mind that my favorite download site was directly responsible.

Thanks for bringing this deleted thread back Pat, although I would like to know why such extreme actions were taken based on nothing more than the comments of a few individuals.
Shouldn't moderating also include a fair examination of the facts before action is taken?
Please excuse me for bringing this up here, but my toes are a little bruised.
I hope this thread is useful to someone. Have a great day.

GettaLife,
The deletion of your thread was explained to you via email and as you know, the comments of a few individuals was not the reason. If you have further questions regarding moderation, please email [email protected].

I also use Ad-Aware, and was quite surprised
to see all the items lurking in my system...
Great product, and FREE! :^)
