I have just "discovered" the hobby! I am, initially, going to restrict my buying to base sets for teevee series that I have on tape. I lucked out yesterday and found two costume cards and an autograph card in a Farscape Season 2 box. As I don't intend to collect these, I have some pretty good bargaining power already!
Can any of you fine dealers give me a link where I can go to find reputable non-sports card traders like Becketts (I think they may be sports cards only).
Thanks much.
(damn, this is going to be an expensive hobby, right??)

RB,
Should have warned you that this hobby can be addictive. I believe that Beckett still publishes a non-sport guide. Also you may find some info on Beckett.com for dealers. Another site you might check wizardworld.com. I hope I have the site name correct as I am at work at the moment. If it is not correct, leave a post and I will check at home tonight. This site has auctions primarily for non-sport cards. I can't remember the names of the better non-sport guides (there were some that were considered better than Beckett). I will check and see if I still have some old copies at home and will post the names if I find them.

I just opened a storefront on Beckett, and to my knowledge there isn't anything of this sort listed by any of the dealers there. I can do some surfing though and see if anything turns up.

Good luck on Beckett. I left there a few months back. I hope you do well but it really became bad news. Burbank Sportscards runs the thing and the pop up ads on Beckett drove alot of customers away. You pay $100 a month plus commisions and have no control of your site. Those pop ups are put on your site that you pay for and along with annoying customers, they drive them to sites other than yours. There is a heck of alot more BS I can tell you but this is not the place for it. I am sure it works for others but they went from 300 dealers down to around 100 in the last year as they became less and less dealer friendly.

Had to register my bloody CC just so I could answer this post!
OK, for prices get yourself a Non-Sports Update magazine. http://www.nonsportupdate.com/index.htm. The only real non-sports guide still available and a very good source of information.
If you want to see what all is in a particular set, http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/allender/jachlist.htm visit Jeff Allender's House of Checklists.
You may also be interested in http://www.nonsportcollector.com/ The Non-Sport Collector E-Zine.
And if you have access to usenet, the rec.collecting.cards.non-sports group has some regulars that hang out. It gets a lot of ads, but there is some discussion too.
And yes, your new hobby is going to cost you a lot of money, but you will be very happy to spend it. The little bits of cardboard are addictive!
Non-sports is what I do in case you couldn't guess.
Edited to add: Base sets will be relatively inexpensive for you to aquire. Many dealers break cases to get the autos/costumes/etc and have many, many common sets to dispose of.

Just think R.B. I helped pull you out of the woodwork with one of my posts. Lets just hope the cat doesn't get mad. LOL!!!! Congratulations!!! and welcome to a very overpowering hobby. I myself started out thinking I would buy some cards and send my kids to college. LOL!!! Then it turned into just plain fun. Now I do it for fun and investment. I do not deal in non-sports cards, but I do believe T.J. Kitchens does somewhat, but I can't be positive. Wish you the best. Hillbilly

Thanks all for your help.
I have been able to find some of the Farscape "insert" cards I am looking for, and I have found a buyer for one of the rare costume cards that I have (actually, I "stole" his name from a list of unsuccessful bidders on an ebay auction so he's happy and I'm happy and eBay can take a hike, right!).
I did check the sites mentioned here and none of them seem to be interested in teevee series related card trading.
I am able to find out what's coming via the manufacturer's sites and everything I want is listed on eBay. Problem is, I don't do eBay anymore (an interesting story behind this one), I don't do Bidville anymore (everyone knows why!), and the only non-sports cards I see on Carnaby are Star Wars singles (not interested in movie sets) and overpriced Star Trek sets.
I have also located a couple of good Canadian sources but they deal in full boxes only ... what am I supposed to do with all the extra cards after I have pulled out one complete set?
Thanks again ... I will definitely not get into the sports card market, but I am also looking for a complete set of "Enduring Freedom" cards.

Buzz, you're interested in TV show non-sportscards but only Canadian TV shows? How about ebay Canada or Yahoo Canada sites? Those are going to be tough cards to find.
I went to a non-sportscard show once and the dealers there had many boxes filled with every imaginable card. Most buyers had lists of cards they needed. It was quite a change from the average sportscard shows. Many of the sportscard shows have some sellers that sell non-sportscards as well, so there may be a place to look also. So hitch up the sled dogs and head to town.

RB,
A possible source of non-sport cards are comic book dealers. The large comic book shops in my area almost all have a good selection of non-sport cards. However a large part of their selection were cards of comic book characters or gaming cards.

Hi guys
(nice to see the boards being used for "helping" each other eh!)
bidbids ... I am looking for cards that match the series' I have in my teevee tape collection. To give you an idea, I have been trading and collecting television series' worldwide for the past 18 years and I have around 4000 tapes in my collection. I have stuff that has never been shown in North America, let alone Canada. Guess what I'm trying to say is I am interested in virtually all teevee related card sets!
Steve ... there is a "Comics America" dealer about 20 steps from where I live (used to be STYX Comics). I have bought a few cards sets from him but his prices are extremely high (he even adds a couple of bucks to the Canadian cover price for current magazines like Starlog!) and apparently I can't "order" anything from them unless I join their club which comes with a $5.00 monthly fee. Heck, I can easily find out what new sets are coming out --- don't need to spend $60.00 annually for that!
I have located two Canadian sources so far, but they don't sell individual cards that I may need to complete a set.
As to eBay, can't buy there.
As to Yahoo, won't buy there.
As to Bidville, well, you know ...
Carnaby is the only site I am currently using and as I mentioned, the only stuff there that fits my wants are overpriced Star Trek sets.

There's other third tier sites such as SellYourItem.com that have as many or more items as Carnaby. Try some of those sites. Wallypog has a list of them on her excellent and helpful webpage.

Apparently I am still able to contact Bidville sellers without an official membership! Last night I made two "off auction" buys on two great card sets from Bidville sellers. They won't get the feedback, but I believe they will be happier with the sales

Rb, not sure what you are looking for, but I just check sellyouritem.com in non-sports trading cards there are 26 Starwars auctions, NO Babylon5, Star Trek or XFiles listed, but there are categories.
There is also 2 Comic Trading Card Auctions, 15 gaming(All Pokemon) and 84 "other" consisting of Disney, Jurassic Park, Robin Hood, T2, Alladin and few others I don't recognize...Rap Pack Cards, Candyman....

That was one of the many things I tried to explain to Ed The Idiot. Anyone (including spam harvesters) could come to Bidville and access email addresses of members. Of course Ed The Idiot could not come up with an intelligent response so he ignored me.

Does BV collect a final value fee? If not, why would He be concerned about folks like me who "harvest" His sellers. After all, the sellers are getting a sale and He isn't losing anything.

I've always thought it set a harmful precedent for when the day that the FVFs or other fees like listing fees arrive. That had to be the reason the trading post ideas or proposals were always ignored by BV. There is no profit potential for BV in a trading post other than goodwill of the users.

ballzandstrikes ...
I caught your reference to the SPAM harvesters in you original response
bidbids ... as to precedent, I doubt He even knows what that word means. I do like the idea of being able to browse and buy without being a member though. The only "problem" I may encounter is a bad seller, but that can happen even with a membership. He has not provided any safety nets for any of His members. The folks who I have bought from so far all have eBay and Yahoo fb ratings on their listings and it's easy to check them out there. Besides, for these non-venue deals, I pay with a money order only --- if I get burned, it becomes mail fraud and I can get "satisfaction" using my own forces.
