Good Morning!
What was the best deal you ever got on an online auction? (Don't mention the auction sight please)
This can be either buying or selling or both.
For me as a seller I guess it would have to be a little John Wayne small license plate type plaque. I bought it at a junk store, new, for $6.95 and it sold for over $51.00

AuctionWatch has suspended [IMO, several unfairly] numerous individuals the past week or so, each of whom was an active participant in these forums, so its no surprise that there's little response to your question.

These forums are becoming discussion wastelands, which is not surprising given the heavy-handed moderation taking place here.

Anyway, my "best deal" was an old LP record album bought for fifty cents and sold at auction for $51.

I purchased a very old diamond and platinum ring on one of the auction sites in 1997 for $800.00. Inscription had a date of 1923 and was written in German.

Had the ring appraised when I took it to the jeweler for sizing............

$2600.00!!!!

Hmmm, now as far as buying goes I never know if I get a really good deal or not because I only know what something is worth to me most of the time, LOL. I did pick up a pulled Asus mobo with a 550mhz Pentium processor and 196 megs of RAM for a little over $200 the other day. That was a super good buy considering that particular mobo is practically non-existent anymore.

I also have this old German stoneware beer bottle. I paid about $15 for it on the auction site. I have no idea what it's worth but it's absolutely awesome!

One of my first auctions was for an HP electronic calculator. Someone gave it to us in a box of computer junk. It sold for over $50. I was surprised! Been pickin' up every HP calculator I run across since, LOL.

I paid 25-cents for a spoon holder and sold it for $30-something.

Very bizarre books are a great find. I turned 10 cents into $25.00 with one a while back.

My best find, though, so far was a set of camera backs. I bought them for $2.00 and sold for over $130. If I could do that all the time Hubby could quit his job! LOL

I sell a lot of new items, too, but the above are the types of things that keep me looking for 'clutter'.

WOW batmanforever!!! You must be my on-line twin since that is exactly what I had happen also. I remember posting about it almost a year ago on one of the smaller "other" auctions. When did you find your Chatty cathy and what outfit did she have on?!! What records did she come with and did she still talk? We should compare notes and see who actually got the better bargain~LOL!! Mine was only $1.00 though not $1.50. Gosh it is such a small world!! Here I've been minding my own business for a few months, thought I'd check in to read the boards for a few and find I have an on-line twin!!! Do you by chance live in Texas also??? I'm also a member of Bidbay, eBay, ePier, Bidville and Yahoo. Well toodles all!! Enjoy the fun and GAMES. I'm deriving so much pleasure from RL don't get to read these VERY interesting boards much anymore...

There is a high-rated seller at a particular auction site that used to have the habit of selling quality dolls starting at .01. One day he scheduled about 100 auctions to close at around 2 in the morning. (He bulk-uploaded and I really don't think he meant 2 a.m....) Very few people were around and I was able to pick up a substantial amount of product for under $10.00 total. The resale on it ended up being a couple grand.

I love looking for auctions closing at 2 in the morning.

St. John knit navy jacket, I got it for around $6.00 and it sold for just over $200.00, white skirt $7.00, sold for $99.00, orange tank top for about $4.00, sold for $51.00. I like St. John

Wow Countyourbeans!
Looks like you did alright buying them dolls. LOL. I bought some older rock and roll pins from an antique shop by me for .50 to 1.00 each. (Jackson Browne, Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks etc. etc.) I sold them at auction for anywhere from 8.00 to 22.00 each. I started them at .01 and no reserve. I thought that was pretty good. Have a great night,
Dan

I've had wo fine sales within the last year. One I paid .10c for - a 1928 catalog of small bronze sculptures - sold for 201.50.

The next amazing sale came with another catalog, Machine tools from around the turn of the century - paid $1.00 for it - sold for $243.50

In both cases I shipped the items at no charge to the bidder.

LOL Guess I'll be on the look-out for old catalogs from now on.

I completely forgot earlier about a bunch of old crochet and knitting pattern magazines I found in someone's trash. They ended up selling mostly from $12 on up to $20. I was pretty tickled with that--for someone's garbage, LOL.

I think one of the most fun things is to be able to find something that I can afford to open with a low bid amount. If I pay less than a dollar for something I know I can open the bid at $1 or $2 without losing money. Generally speaking I have no clue what something might be worth or even what will sell. Some of the weirdest stuff has given the best surprises.

Hello Denephew!!!!

When I was reading Batman's post and the item that they had found..I thought it was you!!!!(LOL)

I'm sorry I missed out on that bargain my dear..I sure would have bid on her!!

To stay on Topic...

A year ago ..I purchased in a thrift shop two original Framed Signed lithographs of Gary Patterson for a total of 7 bucks. At the time of purchase I didn't know that they were authentic signed lithos..but decided to do research on them and put them up on the "BAY".
Well, needless to say they sold individually for over $400.00 a piece. That was a Good Day!!!

Take Care,

Hi Lil!! I knew a few would think that batman was me based upon the chatty cathy post~~pulled me out of lurk pronto~LOL!! I'm sure it is all just coincidental~LOL!
Another of my favorite bargains was a vintage french urn I paid under $20 for that went for over $200. I've had quite a few things in that price/sell range. I'm always surprised at bidding wars. You never know what someone wants and is willing to pay. Seems like the things you think are "sure" things do OK and the ones you're iffy about got through the roof.

D,
I remember that vintage french urn! And it does seem that the items you think will do well usually don't and vice versa.

I was at an auction and they tried to auction off three copper molds--you know, the kind you hang on a wall for decorations, etc. Well, nobody bid, so they threw those molds into the next box which had a cute little siamese cat figurine that I wanted. I bid $1.50 for the box and won. Turns out the copper molds were tin-lined and still had stickers showing they were hand-crafted in Turkey--sold for almost $100! And I still have the kitty.

Last October I posted an item for sale at Bidbay as a joke. At that time I was an active chatter, buyer, and seller. They were mad at a certain seller because she was winning all the prizes for listing, by listing with a bulk loader and listing 1000 of each item, which they all said she didn't have in stock So one day, with my "sense of humor" I listed a cheerio. I took a picture of it and everything. I said in the description that it was a joke but that I wanted to list the entire box as soon as I got a bulk lister. Next thing I know, it was getting bids! So I went on the chat board in amazement and said I would donate all the money to Giving @ Home. As the cheering squad took off for the auction of the little O, led by my sister and I and lots of Bidbay Members, the bids grew and grew. Finally my sweet, thoughtful, creative husband decided he would make a special O. So he melted pure copper and in one swift move of his hands he formed a perfect copper replica of a cheerio. The little O became quite popular and ended up bringing $440.00 for Bidbay's Charity. But the day I mailed it off, the CEO suspended me because he didn't appreciate my saying the sight needed some improvements. I still have his threads saved. The fun was over. In January the high bidder tried to recreate the little O's auction but my sister and I were both suspended and could not take part, so it just "didn't mean a thing since it didn't have no zing". It was ended early and that was that. I have a copper Cheerio. My husband made it for me as a reminder of the people that Little O brought together on a chat board and all the people that $440.00 helped. And THAT, folks, is MY best deal on online auctions!!!

Wow...I like this thread as well

I think my best deal was from another Bidbay member whose name I can mention since he is suspended here. He sent me an email asking if I would like to "take the rest of the day off". I sent him one back stating that I would love a day off but I was not really sure what he was referring to. A few minutes went by, and he replied with an email that simply said "check your auctions". Thinking that he was off his rocker, I went and looked...he had closed all 15 auctions using the "buy now" feature. Over 150 bucks in cash and a few for BBB's as well. Paid for everything within a half hour and sent me his addy for shipping. Needless to say, I took the rest of the day off

Wow this is a tough one as I've had lots of good deals selling!

I bought a Lenox cabbage planter in pink at a thrift shop for $1. Perfect condition, no chips, cracks, hairlines, or crazing. Darn thing sold for well over $200 on ebay! Came to find out it was a rare color.

Another good sale was a plastic tablecloth that I purchased at a yard sale. This yard sale was held by one of Elvis Presley's bodyguards (then retired, recently deceased). We spent two days just talking to this great old guy about Elvis and when we were leaving his wife asked if I wanted a table cloth that had been on Elvis' mother's table during the early days. I said sure - she only wanted a quarter for it - because it was ripped. I brought it home and sold it for $90 on ebay!

Just can never tell.

My best buying deals are right after christmas.

I am a scented shower gel, lotion, matching spray junkie.

Someone will have recieved as a gift a set of bath and body products but not like the scent or whatever.......I don't care.

They sell it dirt cheap. I have a few favorite brands I keep an eye on. I got one brand new set for $4.50 plus shipping and it was something I have paid $20+ for the same brand.

My favorite brand is Garden Botanika and I bought quite a few gift collections for a fraction of what I used to pay for them retail. And they were all brand new and unopened sets.

I think I am only going to shop ebay or other auctiona for that stuff and stock up with a years worth every January now lol.
