Add me to the list of paypal users who feel that paypal tricked sellers into signing up and encouraging their bidders to use paypal, just to stick us with fees, plus lie to us that those fees were always in existence, and accuse us of being dishonest if we don't want to pay them. That said, maybe instead of complaining and berating Paypaldamon (remember what happened when everyone berated the ebay help board, they simply packed up and went away), we could discuss some suggestions for how paypal can make its $$$ without charging us bunches of $$$.

1) Have a short waiting period for withdrawals. That way paypal could have the money long enough to earn some interest on the float without needing extra charges.

2) Have a dollar amount or number of transactions limit before fees kick in, to keep occasional users from having to pay like a business.

3) Arrange the fee structure so those who sell more (traditional businesses) pay more. They're the ones saying how great it is to pay 1.9 instead of 8-9% cc fees, and they're the ones who can afford "business" costs.

4) Make it easier for one person to have a business and a personal account- even if I wanted to open a business account, I would need a second email address, and to make electronic transfers, I'd need a second bank account - that's definitely not worth the trouble from my end.

Paypal dam, on another thread you said you're passing along what you read on auctionwatch to the paypal higher ups- please pass this on!

I think you've made some great suggestions-I'd like to expand.

You're #2 When fees kick in. I think a dollar amount is more fair than a number of transaction amount. My reason for this is many sellers sell small dollar items with razor thin profit margins.
Also, the fees should only kick in on the transactions above the dollar limit-would it stink to sell a $5 widget and have that put you over your limit only to find everything before that is now subject to fees ! Ouch.

additionaly-PayPal, please add the buyer address verification-in some incarnation.

Makes more sense to have different levels of accounts.

Personal - can't be paid with transactions using credit card - totally free

hobbyist/part time business - only so many credit card transactions per month - low flat rate or charge per credit card transaction - limit on how many transfers to checking.

business account - lots of services, percentage of transaction or credit card transaction - automatic daily sweeps etc...

As great as these suggestions are, they are an exercise in futility. Look at PayPal's past performance here: the "verified" fiasco, for instance. They asked for suggestions, which were duly given them--and then proceeded to ignore them. Just last week PayPalDamon said that they were "considering" what number of PayPal transactions per month constitutes a "business" and that they'd get back to us on it in a couple of days. Then silence on the topic. Dead silence.

Perhaps I am pessimistic, but it seems to me that a snowball has a better chance in hell than AW PayPal users have of seeing any of the above suggestions acted upon.

edited to remove an extraneous "the"
And an "e" (I wish I could type!)

bunnicula:
No doubt you are at the very least partially correct- I guess I'm still trying to be optomistic.

Another thought-though these suggestions are directed towards PayPal, they are not the only ones reading these boards and messages.

Perhaps PayPals current or soon to be competitors will see and institute these things-look at how quickly Billpoint dropped their fees in light of the recent fiasco, or how BidPay quickly pointed out they don't accept chargebacks.

Possibly the original intent is not always where the benefits arise.

"I think a dollar amount is more fair than a number of transaction amount."

Unfortunately, CC companies charge BY THE TRANSACTION ... nothing would knock PP into the hole faster than a large number of small transactions.

Limiting the number of times per month that money can be taken from a personal account (regardless of balance) would be the easiest way to get the float up to a reasonable amount. I'm a hobby seller, mostly getting rid of excess books and items from various relatives estates. If I could only withdraw by check or EFT once or twice a month it would not bother me. But the high-volume low-margin sellers would be hurting big time.

I have seen posts from sellers who ask for a check EVERY TIME THEY GET A PAYPAL TRANSACTION, often as many as three or four a day! That's really running up the costs.

I can't for the life of me find a legitimate reason why a person would rather have a check mailed to them when the option of direct deposits is offered.

I have a check mailed to me beacuse I want a check and don't want my bank account messed with. Been burnt in the past by a "reliable" company and it will not happen again. However I only get a check about once a month. I would suggest a large reduction of fees or no fees if a certain amount was left as a credit balance in our account. and charge us if we go below that.

Hi,

Many thanks for your suggestions. I have passed along a great deal of this to Product and Marketing.

The policy surrounding business accounts is being defined and should be available very shortly.I have been advised that there will be no forced upgrades and that the policy will be released two weeks before implementation.

I appreciate your patience surrounding this matter, but they want to make sure the criteria surrounding it is fair and equitable.

Your feedback and suggestions are extremely valuable.
