I have my default insurance set at "carrier rates" and left the field blank in global settings.
When I create and auction in SMPro and I go to the Shipping tab --> Tax/insurance tab and I put in "recommended" and then leave the cost field blank as it says to, press OK and I get an error message saying, "Warning!
Please select a valid insurance amount to use with eBay fixed shipping."

Hello Sarah,
Your not doing anything wrong, its just that when you list fixed shipping costs and are setup to display the shipping costs to eBay as well - then eBay wants a fixed insurance cost to go along with it.
It doesnt make sense, but thats how they have it setup currently. The only workaround to keep it setup the way it is for insurance would be to disable the preference to display the shipping costs for the eBay checkout (but I wouldnt suggest it, as eBay will then say 'see item description' on the search pages.)
Typically its best to just list a fixed cost to use for insurance instead, but if you want to disable the eBay shipping section you can do so via the eBay item specifics tab by clicking on the 'payment instructions and details' button.

Hi Christopher,
OK, very confusing indeed!
2 of my auctions allowed me to get away with not putting in fixed insurance costs and 2 did not. But I think I will take your suggestion and put in the fixed insurance costs.
One more question: do you HAVE to use eBay checkout to use the insurance tab? (I don't use eBay checkout currently and don't plan on using it)
On the eBay specifics tab, if you click the 'payment instructions and details' button - here you can indicate if you want to specify costs for the eBay checkout as well, or not.
If you do specify those costs and you ship with fixed rates, you will need a fixed insurance amount, otherwise you can let it be calculated.
You do not have to enable the eBay checkout in order to offer insurance, but generally most users want to specify the eBay costs because of the previous mentioned limitations of not doing so.
