It *may* work in Windows 7, but not quite as well as XP where it was designed to perform.
That said, if you get Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate version, they come with something called XP mode that can run programs designed for Windows XP without any issues. If you end up with "home premium" then you would need to use some of the posted workarounds as that one doesn't have an XP mode available.
