I had an auction close on 2/18.
Buyer contacted me, said they would "send payment". They DID NOT mention PayPal, I assumed check/M.O.
Well, 10 days went by, no payment, and I sent the "by the way, where's the money" email. As soon as I had hit the send button, I logged on to PPal to send a payment, and there was a balance in my account from this buyer , sent FIVE days ago!
Number one, I thought you had to accept a payment before it was credited to your account.
Number two, I thought you got an email when someone had sent you money!
Now I've had to apologize for the "pay up" message, and I'm way behind in shipping this item.
Have I missed something here?

Do you have a personal or business/premier account? The accept/decline feature only comes into play if you have a business/premier account and the buyer's payment doesn't include a verified billing address.

Number two, I thought you got an email when someone had sent you money!

Yes, they do send email notifying of payments. Do you have your preferences set to get notices? If your preferences are set to receive notices and you didn't get one email does get lost, it does happen. More so with some ISPs than others. AOL loses internet email like it was a virtue (at least with my wife's account it does).

Thanks uaru - Mine is a personal account, so I guess that explains part of it, although I seem to remember having to accept payments in the past.
My preferences are set correctly, bugs me the one time I don't receive the message is when I'm not expecting any activity on the account. Had to chew some shoe leather on this one!
