I don't know if you can pick a virus up through Yahoo mail, but I just received an email from RED with the subject "Web Advice" and it had an attachment. I didn't really snap until I read the first line in the email which was:
"Hi! Just sending this to you for your advice."
That is what the emails that carry the SirCam say!!!!!
I deleted the email and then emptied my trash.
I don't know why Yahoo's filters didn't catch this or if they even scan for viruses. I am just recovering from a total wipe of my computer a couple of week ago! Still don't know who or how or what infected me, but NORTON erased all my files as "infected" during it's routine weekly scan. I had to be reconfigured and have every thing re-installed. I don't want to go through that again.

That email showed up on my computer and was over 900 bytes in size. I did not see any relation to Yahoo with it though. McAfee.com online services zaped it for me. I noticed the email after I went to Ebay forums with a Ebay auction question. I put my email in the messages for member to email me. Have you tried McAfee.com online scan services and shield? It works great

No the email has nothing to do with yahoo, but it was sent to my "@yahoo.com" mail address. I checked my Hotmail, but no suspecious messages there, yet . I just didn't realize that emails with possible viruses could be sent (and not caught by filters) to the web based mail servers.
I have sent an email to Yahoo asking about it, but of course I haven't heard anything from them yet.
Still not sure what would happen if I opened an infected email at Yahoo or Hotmail...would it infect my computer or their servers?????

Whenever I receive attachments at my Yahoo mail there is always a little box next to the paperclip attachment asking if I want to scan it for viruses before opening. HOWEVER, I received a sircam email in Yahoo mail the other day and this was one time that that little box was not beside the attachment! To run a test, I forwarded the email to my regular ISP based email account, which I knew was protected by Norton, and Norton did find that the sircam was attached and deleted it immediately. I don't know why Yahoo didn't offer it on that one particular message though.......
Just letting you know you are not alone

Thanks spottydoggy! I'm glad to see I am not alone!!
To be honest I have never seen the box to check for scanning! I have to pay closer attention I guess...
I am surprised that Yahoo filters did not catch this and I am still curious as to what would have happened if I had opened the attachment!
No answer from Yahoo to my two seperate emails about it either....
I've really never worried about possible viruses in my web-based email accounts. I guess I had a "false" sense of security. I will definetly be more careful in the future.

My yahoo mail spam started showing up on my ISP email. Four times I have received spam that I tried to delete or block and it has destroyed files on my computer. I've asked yahoo what this is and why it shows up there. No answer. If this makes sense to anyone, please post it because I just got another one and I won't touch it. No telling what it will do. I'm rather sick of the entire thing. It isn't a virus. It is a terrible nuisance and I have tried to shut down my yahoo email but can't.

Well, I did get an auto response finally that said thanks for reporting this and due to the large volume of emails they get, I won't be hearing from them again unless they need something from me.
It took me two to get an auto response....
Hope everything eventually gets straightened out.

Hi Friends
I'm getting the same email every morning.
My husband said it's the CODE RED. It asks me for advice. Anyway.. I've been deleting.
I have 2 other email accounts (not yahoo) and zilch on them. I tend to think Yahoo is the source as well. Careful out there!

Well, I received another response from Yahoo yesterday. I had asked if it was possible for me to pick a virus up through their web-based service and also advising them of the suspect email I received in my Yahoo mailbox.
They said if an item comes in with an attachment, you are giving the option of scanning it. If you choose not to scan it, and download it and it does have a virus, Yahoo cannot be held responsible. They suggested NOT opening any attachments.
I gather from this, that YES I can get a virus from mail delived to me through Yahoo. Up until this email, I had always just assumed I was safe from viruses using a web-based mail service such as Yahoo or Hotmail. Now I know I am not, so I will be much more careful about reading my mail!
