What do you mean? You're joking, right? They've had 3 years to get their act together and they're still taking baby steps! It's likely much too late to dethrone eBay.

Too late to even compete as an equal let alone to "dethrone" eBay.

Maybe they are trying to "convince" their stockholders????

Or maybe in the minds of the decision makers if nowhere else????

I believe they are a good #2 choice, but unfortunately, as pointed out already, I agree they let the chance to truly rival eBay slip through their fingers.

when yahoo started the auction ,it did not intend to dethrone ebay,it is more like a sideshow for members when they are online.
of course it would be nice if it turns into a success story, some one said she heard it in the news.
yahoo needs more revenue so with this new guy ,they could be eyeing something which can bring them some revenue??
also when they said they will compete head on ,they do not have to be in auction,it could be storefronts, both ebay and yahoo have storefronts.

I don't know what they are planning though. I read an article the other day that said the leadership was going to re-emphasize the auction aspect of Yahoo. The article quoted Yahoo as saying that now that the "less serious" auctions had been removed (noticed they didn't use the word "clutter" the auction site was positioned for better success in terms of self through and they were going to emphasize that in their advertizing. The article did go on to say that ebay is, and will be number 1, but that there was plenty of room for number 2. I'll see if I can find the article again and post the link.

I follow both Yahoo and eBaY. I keep track of a couple of sellers on both venues.

A seller on eBay carries a line of products that consistantly sell for between $85.00-$115. Their sell-through is around 90%. They usually list around 100 items per month.

There is a seller on Yahoo of a similar line. Who is doing good to close with a 15% sell-through and at prices under $75. They list about 100 items per month also.

I have purchased from both. Both lines are quality lines and both sellers are quality sellers!

I know the seller on Yahoo could move to eBay and with time could probably do as well. It's a shame that they can't duplicate the success on Yahoo. I have to give them an A+ for trying, though. I don't see how they can afford to list week after week with such a low sell-through.

That's the main difference I see between Yahoo and eBay right now!

yahoo clutter?
yahoo used to offer auto relist up to 6 times!!
yahoo may charge a listing fee but there is no final value fee and yahoo pay direct is free,so why not give it a try??
ebay is still king, unfortunately unless you have rare items, else it has become a clearing house, you need cash ,sell it fast ,sell it on the cheap, thats ebay

Sulyn1950: That Yahoo seller you're talking about may be using up free credits on Yahoo. I know I still am. Last year Yahoo offered credits of $1.00 for each eBay or Amazon positive feedback a seller had. I received over $500 worth of credits.

I have about $200 free credits left. It is very slow at Yahoo right now and hopefully it will pickup soon.

if yahoo wants to lure the powersellers of ebay,it can offer that again-one dollar for one positive feedback.

I don't know what you people sell, but in my categories Yahoo does very well. ebay wishes they had the shopping portal Yahoo has. Yahoo is the #1 shopping site on the Internet today, including Auctions, Yahoo Stores, and Classifieds. They also have more big name retailers then ebay. I think they ARE the only real competition for ebay and will give them a run for their money.

i have a shop on yahoo and i have received two orders last week by asking my ebay customers to visit my shop, other than that there was no sale coming thru yahoo shopping for entire week.
yahoo has a lot of big shops, and it gives attention to these shops, most of these shops do not have many items but they have the name like barnes and noble, smithsonian musuem shop etc

I have auction running and I sold 8 items last week. I consider that good in the middle of the back to school slump that comes every year at this time. It's also slo on ebay, I had 20 auction end last night and only one sold, normally I sell over half.

Yahoo has and ebay doesn't.....

Counter that let the seller know how many watches have been placed on the item,
auto-relist, free system for customers to pay with a credit card, customizable booths that you can intagrate into your web site, free picture gallery, free auction managment tool (I have to pay ebay $5.00 a month for theirs). NO final value fee's, which means I can list more item that might sell with the money I would have paid for FVF's. CHEAPER listing fee's.

They are pretty much equal with ebay when you crunch the numbers, less sales with less fees = the same as more sales with more fees.

I think it's great that they aren't trying to copy ebay, but on the other hand in the past year I've seen ebay copy Yahoo with the introduction of buy now, stores, and promised counters.

I am bored with listing on Yahoo. I know I pay no fees as Yahoo.co.uk do not charge for listing, but I get no visits and no bids. Would rather pay fees on eBay, get 172 visits and sell for $17.00!
There is a UK seller on Yahoo with some 1,300 lots. The first 100 lots I looked at have no bidders. Yahoo is boring for an International dealer. This is not my trading name.

For me Yahoo is the better site. I sell more, and pay less to do it. It all adds up to profit. From what I see on my TV the ads for Yahoo and ebay are the same. One plays a Yahoo commercial and another plays a eBay.

I'm not concerned with page hits. I have had things on eBay have 170 hits and not one bid. Were on Yahoo I have 24 hits and 3 or 4 bids. For me Yahoo is the way to go.

From the yahoo news article linked above:
Now that the fees have removed much of the clutter from not-so-serious sellers

Listing fees have removed "not-so-serious sellers".
Only they forgot that every one of them were serious buyers. Personnally, I have not bid on one item since Yahoo started fees. I will not bid again on Yahoo auctions until they eliminate listing fees in favor of FVF fees. Yahoo auctions desperately needs buyers and yet, it showed the door to many of us. As much as we like to critise eBay, it's the best there is to both sellers and buyers.

Things have been slower on Ebay this month. We sold less than 50% last night which was our worst day on Ebay since last December/Jan. We already have bids on 9 of 14 for tonight.

Yahoo on the other hand has been pretty much dead. Sales have dropped to less than 10% compared to around 25% a while back. I've been a bit inconsistant in listing on Yahoo lately because I get discouraged and lose interest. Hopefully things will pick up once we again establish a consistant presence.

>>"if yahoo wants to lure the powersellers of ebay,it can offer that again-one dollar for one positive feedback."<<

It won't work unless they also provide a consistant base of bidders. I have a $800+ worth of credits left, but it sometimes seem barely worth the effort to list on Yahoo.

We sell in excess of $1 million a year on EBAY.

We have items that sell every week on EBAY.

Decided to list some of them on Yahoo and see if the fish are biting.

Started them at a lower price than we do EBAY.

The Buy Price is lower than our Buy It Now price on EBAY

Not a bid to be seen. Minimal number of page views.

Yahoo is still a waste of time. EBAY remains the king.

Even Yahoo's Premier Sellers aren't doing that great. Some are getting bids but the prices are nothing to write home about just like on eBay. Lot of lookers and very few bidders on both sites in August.

http://list.auctions.yahoo.com/show/premiumsellers?catid=23336

eBay has outsold Yahoo 5:2 for me in August, but Yahoo is still generating a few sales I wouldn't have had otherwise and for the same prices I would get on eBay. I list the same things on both sites and my items are usually bought using Buy It Now both places. The Yahoo sales usually generate a few $$$s more in profit since the listing fee is lower and there's no FVF and Yahoo bidders are more likely to pay using the free PayDirect service instead of the dreaded PayPal service and their 2.9% plus 30 cent fee, or BillPoint and their 3% plus 35 cent fee.

So those are what Yahoo considers "Premium Sellers". About 1/3 of the list have less than 20 listings.

Why is it "yahoo vs ebay"? Shouldn't everyone who is a seller or a buyer want both to be successful marketplaces? Without competition, and it could happen if yahoo doesn't grow - we'll be looking at a monopoly. It's darn close now. The trouble I see is that it's hard to compare the two. eBay is obviously the king, and yahoo struggles along. But with auctions it such a chicken and egg world...so what comes first for yahoo, more sellers come and try it, and that brings buyers?...or more sellers have success there, and that'll bring even more....sellers, leading to more buyers....and the cycle continues? For this to happen, yahoo is going to need some more sellers who are willing to build up a 2nd option for everyone. Does anyone think this will happen?

wedgyboy, just how long have you been selling on Yahoo??????????

If you were around last January before the listing fees started, you would know that Yahoo ONCE was a growing auction where we were able to sell SOME of our listings at decent prices (10-15% sell-through was common). The bidding wasn't anywhere NEAR as active as ebay's, but Yahoo Auction was SLOWLY and STEADILY getting there.....until the stupid YaWhos pulled the plug.

"For this to happen, yahoo is going to need some more sellers who are willing to build up a 2nd option for everyone. Does anyone think this will happen?"

Not until Yahoo Auction lowers their selling fees.

serious sellers should look at listing fee as part of the cost of doing business.
back in the old days, when most ebay items ended with multiple biddings,a semi precious stone pendant which cost 75 cents was bidded up to 50 dollars,no one complains of listing fee.
listing fee makes a seller think carefully what he wants to list and how much should he start the bidding at,there are just too many items listed at ridiculous asking price in free auction sites, take a look at bidville, autorelisting of oreintal antiques at a few hundred thousand to a few million dollars .
makes one wonder-if you have an item asking a few million dollars, why cant you afford to list it on ebay and pay a small fee and get better exposure?

I sell a lot of eclectic stuff, so as I see it the buyer on Yahoo is bidding on a different type of item than the buyer on eBay. Also, I think the auctions are difficult to navigate on Yahoo. It would be nice if a bidder could access the search engine from any place instead of having to go back to the home page to search. I find that annoying in itself. Maybe there's another way to search Yahoo?
